Thin is good and offers less resistance in cutting. Strength is a factor of length and width; I'd favor a blade that had a strong tip design and substantial width. Most importantly a good factory grind, .002-.003 before sharpening at the edge. The Stretch is a good suggestion, any of the rescue blad...

I designed a sheath that could be carried up of down with off the shelf parts. I made the mistake of over torquing the screws, (saddle bolts) that I used to assemble the sheath. The customer couldn't get the bolts loose and returned the knife with the sheath virtually destroyed. I have every torx bi...

Les and his wife have been very good for the industry, supporting many businesses. They are a job shop and I don't believe them to be a huge business, employee wise. When you have highly skilled people working at capacity and one person gets ill, has family problems, etc it can really throw a monkey...

Most of the Damascus is in Japanese made knives produced by "Takafu" The damascus clad is of fairly soft stainless steels, that are of a fairly low Carbon content so they scratch fairly easy. Check out a thread a while back titled; Steel Junkies: S 90 V clad with cpm 154 cm....Take care...Ed

Damascus or damask means watered steel because the crucible steels gave the impression of rivers and pools in the steel, after many folds giving many layers. Modern damascus is usually a laminate of two or more steels. The choice of the steels is paramount in that material quality and performance. Y...

Anything that discolors the blade is generally some form of oxide, Cliff explains that concept well. The better patinas usually include something beside O2. We did some experiments on 4 inch pieces of bandsaw blade in HCl at different heat treaments and states, annealed normalized, and hardened. Thi...

I like VG-10, for me it takes the least amount of maintenance to keep a reasonable edge. I have chipping issues with ZDP and S30V. I really don't tolerate chips and sharpen them out of the edge. I sharpen with a slack belt of 40 microns and then buff. This edge is a polished micro serrated edge. The...

I like both. IMO it takes more or different skills to pin a knife rather than screw. People don't generally mess with the pins and the thread lock compound that Spyderco uses won't hold up to multiple adjustments, a couple yes but not more. Adjustments made to a pinned knife requires a hammer, and s...

Paul, this billet was prepared by putting a one inch thick piece of S90V between two equal layers of 154 CM powder. Then this billet is hipped, then rolled. So the final product is CPM 154 Cm, and double hipped S90 V. There may be some very slight benefit from double hipped S90 V. I doubt that you w...

There are some considerations besides function in getting a product to market. The clad h...

Many of the Spyderco ELU have complained that their 420 J2 laminated blades were getting scratched in use, the clad was too soft. This is not a function problem but a cosmetic problem. The S90V CPM 154 CM recommendation was for folder blades and kitchen use. A lower Carbon clad would be desirable to...
