Re: The Golden Rule of Sanding
With fine grit sandpapers (800 and higher) a little water keeps the sandpaper from loading up. If I'm sanding a blade (or any metal) I use a small amount of WD-40 instead of water to keep the sandpaper from loading and to keep my sanding motion smooth. Another thing I do (on flat surfaces) to make s...

Re: First Mule Handle - Some tips and issues I had
Beautiful work!
I like the liners and the coolibah. I think the crack is great. It adds visual interest and makes the knife even more unique.

Re: The Golden Rule of Sanding
Great topic! I do most rough shaping of metal with 60 grit and rough shaping handle materials with 80 grit. From there I go to 120 grit for both metal and handle materials. After that I use more grits for metal than I use for wood and other handle materials. For metal I use 180, 240, 400, 600, 800, ...

Re: landscape photos!
Is that Alberta Falls? I don't know if it has a name. This was just a pic I took of a cool thing I blew past on my to another cool thing. It was early in my hike up Glacier Gorge in RMNP. The view looked pretty awesome (it's always far better in person) so I stopped just long enough to hold up my p...

^You clearly have the skills Mike. Hopefully you'll be able to use those skills to at least make yourself some additional income when you're ready to retire. Happy waterfall Wednesday! Here's my contribution for this week. Just a view from the trail (taken with my phone) while exploring in the Rocky...

Re: USPS, UPS or Fedex ?
Every knife I've shipped internationally has been shipped via USPS, tracked and insured. Many of my international customers have specifically requested USPS because it's the only one that is consistent in their specific area. I've not had any problems with deliveries yet.

Re: Making a Mule Handle (step-by-step)
There's a wide range of hardware possibilities available from the usual knife making supply sources. There's also a lot of personal preference involved in choosing what to use. It will be easiest if the hardware choice doesn't require you to enlarge the holes in the tang. That's something most peopl...

Re: Making a Mule Handle (step-by-step)
With the new Spy27 Mule 2 releasing soon, I think we will see more attempt to put on their own handles on a blade that is more readily replaceable. I'm impatient to see that ! I get that putting your own handle on a precious and unique blade might scare some people. I might try to do a screw-in set...

Wow... late to the Mule Team game, but making a handle sounds fun. Huge thanks to this thread and the original poster for the detail and photographs. Kudos :bug-red-white :bug-red-white :bug-red-white I'm glad you found it. Helping people that are new to Mules get started on their first handle is w...

^Both are amazing shots Mike! I especially like the Tropic Ditch Falls picture. Your pictures are extremely well done. Excuse me if I should have known this already, but are you a professional photographer? Your pics look very professional. Here's my (amateur) contribution to WW. ;) https://i.imgur....

^^ Hi Tom. I have been using a Grizzly G0704 for about 5 years. Many times I have pushed it harder than it was intended to be used and it has impressed me. I also talk with Michael Reinhold from time to time (designer of the Spyderco Rhino). He bought the same mill about 3 years ago and he has told ...

.. You can't take the contents of a full garage and fit it into another full garage without disrupting the rules of quantum mechanics, so I ended up having to let a lot of his tools go. For someone who enjoys the history of old tools and appreciates the work of the people who's shoulders we stand o...

Re: Finally Got Burned by USPS
This sucks to hear. I have shipped a lot of knives to a variety of places around the world. I mostly use USPS, tracked and insured. When I ship them internationally I always use USPS. For international shipments Customs requires that I write how many items and specifically what they are. In that cas...

Re: Magnacut Obsolete?!!!
As a result Magnacut already has one of the finest grain structures and some of the best carbide distribution of any knife steel currently available. I wonder whether this advancement will have a greater affect on steels like Magnacut that are already fine and well distributed I would think that th...

Re: Rockwell Hardness Tester
Your best bet for a low price might be to find a used Rockwell tester through ebay or used machinery source. A Rockwell tester requires that you learn the specific procedure for how to operate it correctly in order to get consistent results no matter what. This will include learning how to check it'...

Re: What Makes A Knife Collector
Someone who sees their knife assortment as a collection. For me, D's answer is the answer. There's so much gray area one might want to debate here. How many? What did they cost? Are they custom or mass produced? Are the knives themselves considered to be "collectable" by the knife communi...

I know we're getting side-tracked and I'll try to steer us back, but old tools is a subject I can't resist commenting on. My grandfathers on both sides of the family were engineers. One was aeronautics and the other aerospace. Both enjoyed making things in their free time. I have been fortunate to h...

Old tools are really cool! I am slowly collecting them whenever the opportunity presents itself. But, THOSE old tools are on a whole other level...just amazing!
