One of the posters here mentioned that Illinois knife laws prohibit knives that are 3" or longer. I assume that this does not apply if you are fishing, hunting or camping. Am I correct, or is a Stretch or PE Salt a "dangerous weapon," even if you are fishing or camping? I ask this, si...

I really want a knife with better edge holding than the older 440C I have. How does H1 compare in that respect? Is it as good at holding an edge as VG10 or S30V? I always thought of the H1 blades as perfect around salt water. I have used 440C for salt water fishing and never had a problem with rust....

The Military looks like it has a good blade for this sort of work, but does it fit in a jeans pocket? I am wary of pocket clips - I can easily see losing a knife in a boat.

Spyderco Folder for freshwater fishing

Which folder do you think would do the best job in freshwater fishing for smaller fish, including panfish, smallmouth or even largemouth bass? I wouldn't want a folder larger than 5" closed, and I am not sure if I want ZDP-189 or VG10. I suspect that VG10 would be a better choice. I want edge h...

Arty, your description of what you want sounds like a description of the Police 3. ;) The blade on the Police 3 looks like it would be good for fishing and general use, but the handle is close to 5 1/2" long. How does that work in your pocket? The largest knife I have ever pocketed is a large ...

For me, once a pocket knife won't fit in your pocket, I'd just as soon use a fixed blade. I can't see using a folder for chopping or heavy duty work outdoors. I'd like a Catcherman, but without any partial serrations. In fact, I'd really like an upsized Rookie, but with a blade about 4 1/4 or 4 1/2&...

I made a double-sided strop using Hand American leather. On one side, I use 1200 grit Clover Compound - it is a silicon carbide powder in grease. On the other side, I use Norton diamond paste - .5 micron, if I recall correctly. I have used Lee Valley green compound in the past. It works fine and is ...

I would avoid the regrinding - it can heat and soften the steel unless you are very careful. I wouldn't mind the slight nick - it would be preferable to risking mangling the blade on a knife that you may not be able to replace.

Some people sell the used prototypes. I have seen them online at a site that mainly sells sheaths (near Chicago).
This is not the same thing as a custom that is designed for an individual.

In Illinois, a blade 3" or over is defined as a dangerous weapon, but a shorter blade could be redefined that way, after the fact. I normally carry a blade that is shorter than this. In fact, I took 1 mm off of my 3" Rookie blade using a belt sander. I would stay at or under 3" - if t...

I believe that in Illinois, the law states that 3" and over is a dangerous weapon. This makes the Caly3 over the limit, but the Delica is OK. I took 1mm off of my Rookie.
In Chicago, the blade needs to be under 2 1/2".

Argentine Lignum Vitae

That looks a lot like Argentine Lignum Vitae. It is hard, but easy to work with sharp tools. It does make you light headed if you sand it and don't wear a respirator. The stuff is heavy and strong, and one of the toughest woods out there.

Kopa or Walker

You can still find the Kopa, with a blade about the same size (perhaps 1/6" shorter) as the Leafstorm. Another option in a Spyderco is the Michael Walker liner-lock. It is more knife than the Kopa, but not so big as to scare people. The blade is about 2 5/8" long.

I like the Rookie as is. Frankly, I'd be interested in another knife the same size, but with double liners. Either G10 or carbon fiber would be nice.
