Re: Vintage knife review: Rescue version 2

.... This dude's website is a pretty good resource to learn more about the different versions and look at pictures: http://paulberetta.com/sheepsfoots.htm .... I bet The Deacon would love that dudes collection 😉 Ah, is the Deacon on here the guy that runs that site? I'm pretty sure he's on the foru...

Vintage knife review: Rescue version 2

You might've seen my review of Spyderco's original Rescue and noticed how much I loved it. Well, I enjoyed that knife so much and y'all commented so enthusiastically about your own various Rescues that I decided to try out the updated second version of it, and I love this one even more. It's kicked ...

Re: Advanced Rit Dye Techniques?

I've heard of people using glue from a hot glue gun to cover parts of the handle prior to dyeing. Never dyed a knife myself (yet) but from the photos it did seem to work pretty well. That was on an FRN knife by the way.

Re: Help with an odd native 5?

That is unfortunately a fake Native 5. The same lettering with the weird capitals that you have has been reported a few other times here, if you search the old threads you may find one of the ones I'm thinking of. Sorry about your knife, the counterfeiters are getting pretty good at making fakes tha...

Re: Vivi Pass-around

I'm interested! In the Pacific Salt!

Not because of the thin edge really, although that's cool too, but I mostly just want to try out what the old-style Endura handle feels like. Been considering buying one on eBay but I'd like to know first if the handle will work for my hands.

Thanks, guys. embry386, I'm sure it was partly your pics that got me going here.
Wow, really? That's pretty cool :D

If you want any more photos of it, or photos at a specific angle or showing a specific aspect of the knife, or photos of it in comparison to some of my other knives, let me know.

Re: Is collecting knives and other items greedy? How would you answer this person?

I think it's selfish buying knives you have no need for. How is it selfish? It's not like there's a knife shortage -- Spyderco just makes more of them. Especially when their sales are doing well. I'd ask them to show you the monastery they live in and how they've dedicated their life to sacrifice. ...

Re: The Importance of Spare EDC units: SE & PE

I'm with you Peacent and JD, it is very important to have at least two on you, if possible or desired. How about this idea? Have a more general purpose in plain edge and a Spyderco hawkbill like a Tasman Salt or other in serrated edge? What do you think of that? You know I've been preaching the GOS...

Re: Spyderco oddballs and settling on the one (or ones)

The ATS-55 Rescue is kind of an "out there" design to use as an EDC, especially for me because I don't do any sort of rescue work and I live in a desert not by an ocean, but I love mine and it's my EDC for now. The serrations and sheepsfoot shape without any belly are nice. That handle is ...

I love DLC on knives. If every Spydie ever made had it, I'd own a lot more knives.

Re: What's your opinion on customizing your knives?

I've swapped scales on a couple of my Natives and am considering making my hollow-ground Rescue be flat-ground. I love mods. They're a big part of the fun, for me. ;)

Re: Serration Question

I don't think there's any limit really, the only issue is you could eventually lose the defined shape of the serrations with enough sharpening, and they aren't exactly easy to reprofile like a PE is. That said I would be all for trying thinner FFG SE blades, even if it meant that I'd need to send i...

Re: Serrated Native 5 question

My first Spydie was a serrated Native 5 blackout lightweight. I love it. Characteristic Native built-like-a-tank feel, with a flat-ground blade, and the serrations are great for things like sawing through large blocks of rubber and dried glue, or biting apart duct tape, or anything else that serrati...

Re: Why do you carry a knife?

I got to thinking about this some more, and I have to be honest, there definitely is some fidget toy/pocket jewelry/security blanket aspect for me as well. It is definitely first and foremost a tool to cut things with, but realistically there are plenty of "quality tools" that can cut thi...

Re: FRN Police 4

I'd take a blackout one, if the weight ends up being low enough. It seems to me that the LEOs would also like DLC blades, more tactical less shiny and all that, but I could be way off base there. Dark blue and DLC would also be awesome, you'd get that tactical feel while also having the blue color t...

Re: The Silhouette: Black DLC CF S90V PM2

I don't know much about that model, but they've done a ton of versions of it, maybe it'd be possible to buy a few and swap parts around to get something like you're describing? I wanted a blackout PE Native 5 lightweight before they made them, and I did this to get what I wanted.

That is so beautiful. I especially like the reshaped blade. And that last photo of your Pacific Salt's blade up close is nice, should enter it in the photo of the week contest one of these times ;)

Re: The Importance of Spare EDC units: SE & PE

I have backup Natives in both serrated and plainedge in case I lose my primary user ones. They live in boxes under my bed until something bad happens to the users, and then I'll take them out and make them the new users. Also I have a Byrd Cara Cara 2 Rescue in the car in case of needing to quickly ...
