I haven't tried any XHP steels, but I have to agree with Chuck about ZDP189 and CPM-M4 being the longest lasting among the ones I've tried. I've had a couple of M390 knives but I didn't have them long enough to compare with M4 or ZDP189.

I don't have any of the later version - for those who have both, even though it's hard or impossible to tell the difference in absolute weight, can you feel a difference in balance (weight in the hand vs. blade weight)? Honestly, I didn't pay any attention to how the knives balanced in my hand. I h...

I've had both versions, and I'm also used to heavier folders like a Buck 110/112 and Emersons. When carrying and using them, I didn't notice any difference in the two GBs. My kitchen scale would no doubt list one as two-tenths of an ounce lighter than the other, but my hands and pocket couldn't tell...

I hope this isn't thread hijack, but can anybody advise appropriate dimensions for a leather strop? I'm torn between buying or making. Widths seem to range from 1.5" to 3" and lengths from 6" to >20". I'd just as soon buy a small one (cheaper and easier to store) but wonder if I...

I've never seen one so I can't help with your issue, but I know a lot of folks on BF use them so you might want to ask in M,T, & E over there.

I have said practically word for word everything you just said. I would EDC the crap out of a VG10 Caly 3, and that's saying a lot because i'm a big ZDP fan...i just can't bring myself to really use a CF knife. I just haven't warmed up to the Caly 3.5 yet. I agree with both the G10 Caly 3 as EDC an...

FWIW, my large and small Sebenzas each appear to have full contact along these surfaces, just like my Sage 2. Of course, the tangs are angled in the other dimension to allow for seating of the lock bar, but the surfaces shown in the OP's picture match up straight. This is difficult to describe. :co...

G10 and carbon fiber will hold up better then frn, thats not to say frn will go down easily. My experience is exactly the opposite. I've dropped an FRN D4 on my concrete warehouse floor from 10 or 12 feet in the air with absolutely no results. The knife didn't pop open, the handle didn't get scuffe...

I don't have any particular interest in CF. I buy some CF scaled knives because that's the only way the knife comes (Caly 3, Sage 1). If I don't have a use for the overall knife, I'm not gonna buy it just because it's CF and if I have a choice of scale material, I'll choose something else.

How many always keep one loose buried in their pocket? Is it with your keys? Any pros or cons?, seems like it may be easier to lose that way though..

Just curious, thanks guys

I've tried a lot of sharpeners but the Sharpmaker is the one that's stayed around, along with freehand stones and a bare leather strop. I live ina three story house and I've got three Sharpmakers. I also have all the rods for them including diamond and U/F. I tried an edge Pro and sold it, I've trie...

The others are a Para 2, an all black Para 1 for my garage beater, and an early model Para 1 with the large jimping that was my first. She's semi-ret...

I've never had a Spyderco from China or Italy, but all the other countries do a fine job on the models that I've had from their factories. I don't have a favorite "country of origin" for my Spydercos. I've been satisfied with the quality of the models that I buy from whichever country make...

I've been buying them since about 2004 or whenever the CF D3s came out... they were my first two. I've probably bought between 60 and 90 altogether, currently have about 15. None of them has had what I consider a QC issue. Off center blades and uneven bevels don't count as issues AFAIC. That's just ...

I'd suggest a CF Caly 3 as others have, maybe consider a PPT (slightly larger blade than a D4, smaller than a P2). The Rookie is a surprisingly thin knife for its stated blade length. It didn't feel anything like a D4 when I handled one. The Native 5 could be a candidate, but I haven't handled one. ...

Mine are all set for the factory default, RH/TD. I carry in my RFP most of the time but I never use a clip for pocket carry. When I do use the clip, it's for IWB carry and TD is the best orientation for me when IWB.

I never liked the Manix series, either 1 or 2. I've had 'em all and I've sold 'em off. They were too wide & heavy for my taste. Same with the GB. OTOH, I have 5 Paras, both 1 & 2. One is a garage beater that's been used, mistreated, & ignored for 3 years and still comes back for more. It...

I've used both grinds on both thick (4mm) and thin (2.5mm) blades. The only advantages I see to a convex grind are that it's a stronger edge because it's a bit thicker and it's a bit easier to touch up in the field. Neither of these is a big concern to me so I prefer the straight bevels that Spyderc...
