Solid- I think that sharpening 3 on the uncut side and 1 on the cut side would result in changing the bevel on the flat side drastically. You need to sharpen a LOT on the cut side to ruin the teeth and I don't think you would come close using even the brown stones. Although the blades are saber or f...

The sharpmaker manual shows 2 ways to sharpen serrations. One is to make 3 passes on the "teeth" side and one on the back side. The other is to make 1 pass per side and alternate as you go for a total of 40 passes. I sharpen pretty much every knife i use on the sharpmaker. I have the diamond rods an...

The lobstering industry, mostly because of the large concentration of lobstermen in Maine, where it is a lifestyle as well as a livelihood, is one of, if not the most sustainable fisheries in the North Atlantic. Conservation measures are some of the most restrictive of any commercial fishery. Larger...

I don't think I have ever had anything corrode on any of the salts I have used commercial fishing, recreational boating, swimming, etc. And I never really cleaned or otherwise maintained them after exposure to salt water, bait brine, etc... I am under the impression that everything that is metallic ...

there is a Pacific Salt which would be about the same size as the Endura, have the old style metal clip with the barrel bolt/lanyard hole instead of the screw on clip, pinned construction (until recently) instead of screws, larger opening hole, blunter tip, rust free steel, and titanium clip. I woul...

So why are the large ones illegal to take? Seems it would be like hunting deer where you'd want to take the elders out of the pack before nature claims them anyways. I've never ate Lobster and never really even seen them beyond what you used to see in grocery stores and at seafood restaurants...is ...

A couple more from this weekend. Spare buoys. Each one has a weak link attatched that breaks away at 600 lbs. This is to prevent whale entanglements. They are also painted with our color and pattern and our permit number is burned into the side of each one. Approximately 3600 feet of rope on the kit...

I have found that VG-10 takes a much "toothier" edge than ATS-55 and is much more corrosion resistant. It also seemed to be a "harder" steel as opposed to the "tougher" ATS-55. VG-10 seemed to get micro-chipping on the edges while ATS-55 tended to roll. ATS-55 was easier for me to get a sharper, mor...

I own a gray FRN VG-10 Calypso Jr. and used to own a burgundy FRN 420J2/ZDP-189 version (I gave it to another forumite as I hadn't carried or used it in years) and the only difference between the two knives I had was the color and blade steel. Everything else was almost identical in every aspect inc...

why use titanium and make it more expensive than it needs to be? Any high chromium stainless steel should suffice for the spike and be rust resistant. Now, if the spike IS done in H-1 it doesn't necessarily need to be round. An oblong cross section would work just fine. Even a rectangular cross sect...

wasn't there a rigging knife with spike in the works for a while called the 'tusk'? I vaguely remember it being a derivative of the never produced 'yachtsman'.

I carry a Victorinox Recruit that I found on a set of keys someone left in my dorm suite after a party and never came back for. I've had it since around '97 and carried it daily for almost 3 years.

some more The first pic is an oversized lobster and a legal lobster. The metal device is the gauge to measure legal lobsters. The minimum size we are allowed to take is 3 1/4 inches from the eye socket to the start of the tail (carapace length). The maximum legal size is 5 inches in carapace length....
