Re: Finally picked up a Goldenstone

I'm firmly convinced the Sharpmaker is the best, but I could be tempted by the Goldenstone with a base. Would definitely be interested in a range of grits.

Re: Pivot Material

Pretty sure pivots are steel. The washers in many knives are bronze. Screws and standoff’s are usually steel, though spacers, or standoff’s can be titanium. I think the pivots are generally made of stainless steels from less expensive and easier to machine materials. The use of high end steel being ...

Re: Steel inserts on titanium lockfaces, are they necessary?

I wasn’t thinking of hammering or batoning as a cause for overtravel. I’m firmly in the don’t beat on your folder, get an ax or saw school of thought. I have read that the lockbar can be moved too far in daily use and affect the functionality of the lockbar. The consensus here seems to be that is an...

Re: The Importance of Spare EDC units: SE & PE

I think having backups is a great idea. Back ups to the backups? Carrying 3 blades and having backup backups for all 3? Not to mention spares and surplus and special use blades? Sounds perfectly normal, nothing to see here, move along now. 😉

Re: What's your opinion on customizing your knives?

I like deep carry clips. I also like to sand G10 so it’s smoother to the touch sometimes. I think custom standoffs can be cool. Switching the orientation of the clip to preference is pretty mild customization in my opinion but it’s certainly something I would do if I preferred a different placement....

Re: Steel inserts on titanium lockfaces, are they necessary?

Thanks everyone for the interesting discussion. I guess in my case I don’t carry or fidget with any single knife enough to wear it out. I have noticed some lock stick but it was minor. I have not made a purchase decision based on the presence or absence of a steel lockface insert. Cost and visual an...

Re: Why do you carry a knife?

To cut stuff is # 1. I like the different designs, steels, locks, blade shapes, materials. Even when I travel by air I have one in my checked luggage. Some knives are works of art. Knives are a last ditch self defense choice but utility is really #1 for me. I do own many knives some fairly expensive...

Steel inserts on titanium lockfaces, are they necessary?

I see marketing material saying steel on titanium lockfaces prevents premature wear of the lockfaces and they are often overtravel stops as well. Has anyone seen or heard of wear of the lockface or overtravel of the lockbar being common problems? I own several titanium framelocks and have yet to see...

Re: Which salt knife?

I have the Salt Dragonfly 2 and it’s a great knife. It’s the only Salt series knife I own besides the Spydiechef. I think it’s the better knife and the LC 200N steel is superior to H1. Is the Caribbean too large for you? That is the same steel as the Spydiechef I think.

I’d like to try it out. The Tatanka didn’t do anything for me. I would hope that we’d see it on another knife soon. The Military with a new lock sounds intriguing!

Re: Guide to the Best Knife Steel

Blade geometry and the Heat treat are possibly as important as steel type for an individual design. I have blades in VG 10 which I love but I prefer more exotic materials at this point. I think any steel guide really is just a starting point for discussion. I find that Spyderco is using steels that ...

Re: Who uses Sharpmaker exclusively?

I am not an expert and I admit free hand sharpening with a bench stone is beyond me. I obtain excellent results on folders and kitchen knives on the Sharpmaker and on scissors as well. I have tried a lansky system and found it lacking for me. I use diamond, medium, fine and ultra fine stones. A stro...

Re: How good is the Chaparral - and is the Ti worth it?

I have one in the Raffir Noble. Beautiful, great knife. Will probably buy an FRN user at some point because I consider my current one a “dress” knife. I own several Titanium handled knives and too me they are worth it. I like the feel of the material in hand.
