Re: Vivi's M4 Manix XL DLC Corrosion Log

I wonder if regional microfauna play a role in relative corrosion from sweat, especially close to the body.

Re: H-1 Questions

I know that H1 in SE has fabled high edge retention, but I'm not sure the way that's been measured. we know SE H1 performs better than PE H1. Does SE H1 perform better than PE (other steel)? There might be some data to answer this. Does SE H1 perform better than SE (other steel)? Not sure if there's...

Re: Touching up serrations on the go?

one of the advantages of serrations are the fact that they dull much slower than plain edges. unless you're cutting through sand, odds are good that your serrated edge will hold up until you're back home.

Re: Vivi's M4 Manix XL DLC Corrosion Log

Eager to follow along. DLC makes keeping steels corrosion-free easier, but it's not foolproof.

I have happily found that barkeeper's friend will take off rust appearing on DLC, however. :D

Re: LC200N / Caribbean SE torture test gauntlet of death

Can't wait to get a serrated CQI when they drop! What changes will the CQI bring? Any word? I'd be real tempted to give this knife a shot if they gave it a stiffer detent. Aside from my preference for locks with a strong self close bias the Caribbean has always struck me an essentially perfect desi...

Re: Big little knives

Blade-to-handle ratio has always been a bit of a red herring for me. Blade length is dependent on laws/rules, dimensions of the material being cut, etc. Handle length is extremely personal because ergonomics are so individual. If you've got multiple, different performance criteria that you're aiming...

Re: Ladies On The Edge

I don't think there's anything wrong with gender roles, as long as they're not deterministic. It's just as wrong to denigrate someone who chooses traditional roles as it is to denigrate someone who doesn't choose traditional roles. Having the choice is important, and the freedom to choose what you w...

makes sense. I've given up trying to keep M4 shiny, but if it's used daily it doesn't get too bad. just like an old house, as you said.

Re: Besides salt water, what do you find causes rust the most?

The main culprit where I live is just the tropical humidity. I have pretty much stopped buying more tool steels because they rust in storage. Even steels like cruwear and zdp189. I have no plans to get rid of the tool steels I have because they work fine for me in daily use but I don’t want to have...

Re: Besides salt water, what do you find causes rust the most?

Any conditions that create a triple interface between water, iron, and oxygen. That's why mists and sprays and humidity work faster to create rust than simple immersion. Salts help speed this up.

Apparently my summer pockets are the ideal conditions....

we do know that certain common chemical compounds have a marked effect on pain perception of wounds - salt, for instance. Plus, blood and the circulatory system rely on iron compounds to both carry oxygen as well as signal various processes.
