Re: Cutting boards

Honestly, I started this thread with concern over wear on blade edge. Its interesting to me that this has morphed into sanitation. I probably wasnt specific enough. I have always considered "plastic" cutting boards more sanitary given same wash routine. There seems to be two schools of thought. 1) ...

Re: Unpopular Blade Steels That You Like?

Schrade+ is alleged to have been 440A and I liked that in USA made Old Timer and Schrade traditionals, actually a better steel than their HC was IMO. I've also had a few Chinese blades that were 9Cr... another 440A analog that had decent sharpening response and edge holding, the knives had issues, b...

Re: Sent Brouwer in for bottoming out lock. Returned completely untouched

I am curious about the idea of peening the lockbar ...? That is essentially correct. You are pushing metal near the edge to make the lockbar insert a bit longer. Strength might be compromised to a degree, but as to how much you'd likely need to test to destruction to find out. If it were mine I wou...

Re: Sent Brouwer in for bottoming out lock. Returned completely untouched

There have been numerous posts about how W&R stocks no parts for the knives and cannot get them. The warranty is an "almost warranty" and does not conform to the warranties from other companies. If you have a knife with great sentimental value, do not send it in, IMO. Also, the lock bar insert seem...

Re: Sent Brouwer in for bottoming out lock. Returned completely untouched

Ideally, the replaceable nature of the lockbar insert would mean that when worn to this point, it could be replaced without needing to replace the whole knife... Bingo! This would have been a perfect response from Spyderco... you'd think that part would be something that W&R should have on hand rig...

Re: LC200N / Caribbean SE torture test gauntlet of death

That twinned RG-6 is mostly used for sattelite TV receivers, it's usually stainless or sometimes aluminum braid ... Interesting David, I know next to nothing of electrickery or cables. Anyhow, can’t help thinking stainless braid would likely leave most edges, at least a little worse for wear. :) Th...

Re: LC200N / Caribbean SE torture test gauntlet of death

That twinned RG-6 is mostly used for sattelite TV receivers, it's usually stainless or sometimes aluminum braid, over mylar/aluminum sheathing (sometimes just aluminum), then a fairly hard PE insulator and a copper coated steel center conductor. Suffice it to say that cable shears are the best tool ...

Re: KnifeJoy Damascus Delica and Endura

I can't say I'm all that impressed with the DPS 15 blades I have seen... The entire reason for having a pattern welded cladding is the aesthetics and these are just plain ugly to me :( I have one of the foliage green FRN Delicas with this blade material, it looks better than most of the pics I've se...

Re: Centofante

Any Centofante 4 reissue would make me happy, and a screw-together CQI of either 3 or 4 would be great as well, more premium steel* would be icing on the cake!

*though I'd ask for CruWear or M390

Flipper musings (Mantra 2)

I'm not trying to stir the pot here, just thinking aloud and intrigued by the choices that our favorite knife maker made with the Mantra. First off, I just got a Mantra 2. I had avoided it for a long time, especially since flippers are my least favorite opening system and in light of the contentious...

Re: Cutting boards

Interesting>> but how is bamboo advantageous over other types of wood? I find it really interesting because I've noticed that they are making top quality coffee filters out of Bamboo as well. I don't and will not use any cutting slab or board that is made of a material that will ding up or dull a k...

Re: Cutting boards

Wood and nylon can both harbor bacteria: wood in the fibers of its structure, nylon in the cut marks left behind by use. Both should be cleaned after each use, the best way is with a dilute bleach solution, but I'm still alive and use just hot water and dish soap. My favorite cutting boards are bamb...

Re: Official 2020 Discontinued List

Ehhh... Mantra 2 on the way, I'm not really psyched for the flipper aspect, but handle and blade shape are both features I liked from day 1, as well as M4 being a steel I don't hate ;)

Re: C46 Hap40 Lum Sprint run touch up and spa.. at Golden?

I'll second that... if it's going to be a safe queen after the cosmetic refresh, then find an independent blade specialist like BBB who can do the work, then lock it away so all that cost and hard work aren't spoiled the first time you cut dirty cardboard with it. Otherwise, keep working on your sha...

Seriously though, there are probably ten times as many fountain pens on Ebay as there are Spydercos. If you want to actually us...

They're gonna have to ban keys and ballpoint pens too if they really want to keep me out of my Amazon boxes!

Re: Zdp-189 myths and truths

in my use it was nearly impossible to sharpen past "barely sharp enough" with water stones, but using diamond abrasives it isn't bad at all. I agree that it holds a fine/polished edge longer than other "Super" steels, though, not all that much better than the M390-ish steels. my experience with edge...

Wittnauer and Wyler are my focus, with a good number of mid-century and earlier Elgins, though many of my nicest are from other makers... Re: Native 5 in G10 vs. Native 5 Lightweight in FRN

My first G10 Native is the smooth G10/CruWear KC exclusive and I really like it! feels even more solid than the FRN version and the linerless G10 isn't too heavy.

I'm glad to have both, but wouldn't personally want the linered version.
