Re: Hiking knife

Chad... I think it shows that LC200N is well up to the outdoorsman's tasks. ... No doubt about it. :) (on a side note, I continue to be surprised by AEB-L/13C26 and how tough it really is.) I know, right?! I am just about to order 6 little sheets (6"x24") of AEB-L in different thicknesses so that I...

Re: Hiking knife

I’m surprised no one yet has suggested the Temperance 2. It is 5” of full flat ground VG-10 with a grippy micarta handle and a sheath. Might be too pricey for the OP, but it’s a great all around fixed blade. I did suggest the Temperance 2. It's a great knife and might be ideal for the OP's stated r...

Re: Hiking knife

Interesting. And yet when you look at this, LC200N isn't all that high on toughness compared to 3V/4V and A2. https://www.bladehq.com/cat--Best-Knife-Steel-Guide--3368#lc200n I'm not a steel expert by any means and I'm sure your source is better.. but they don't appear to be quite in agreement. Tha...

Chad, I was going back through this thread and.... Are you nuts?! :p https://i.imgur.com/cG2XvHtl.jpg Seriously though, thank you for all you've done here! I sincerely appreciate the time, thought and effort you've been putting into finding new limits in knife steel performance. The fact that...

Re: Hiking knife

Hmm.. not seeing where LC200N would be a good choice for anything having to do with wood. It's strength is in it's corrosion resistance. It's not a notably tough steel if you believe the various charts scattered about the web. For a fishing/bait knife particularly in saltwater the Waterway would be...

Junction has the advantage that it's still on disco sale at several places, too.
That would be my pick too...but I'm biased because I have spent a good amount of time talking with Gayle Bradley and liking him as a person tends to affect my opinion. :)

Re: 3V or 4V Steel in a folder.

[... You guy are market movers!!! :D.. LOL! Truth is powerful stuff! Joking aside, this reminds me of a great point... one that dovetails into Sal's concept of leaving "shiny footprints" IMO. First a little digression... A VERY wise man once told me "truth is the most important thing we have" . He ...

Re: Damasteel blade for under $75?!

...I prefer a relatively low contrast etch... Me too. Because of the composition of the 3 steels in this mix it's takes more to get a high contrast than usual. In fact, while most damascus style steels are etched in a Ferric Chloride solution this one needs a heated Hydrochloric Acid solution. Sinc...

Re: Hiking knife

Hi Spyderwolf, I spend a lot of time hiking in the woods as well. Backpacking and wilderness exploration have been a passion of mine for 35 years. I have designed and currently make a couple of fixed blades that are specifically intended to be hiking companions. Spyderco has a few such options that...

Re: We are saved! Baseball Season is here!

.. In comes Hader for the 9th...2 outs and of course Bellinger blasts the game winning homer. That's now TWO 2-strike bombs on Hader! One of them was on an 0-2 count and the other was with 2 outs in the 9th. Go Cody!! ... You could feel the momentum changing and I was about to throw in the towel an...

Re: Hiking knife

the problem with asking this question on a spyderco forum is that no one will tell you you should just get a mora. ;) If someone asks the question on a Spyderco Forum it is assumed they are asking about a Spyderco product and it would also be needlessly rude (to the host of the forum Spyderco ) to ...

Re: Damasteel blade for under $75?!

Bear in mind that the piece in the picture isn't etched. It's just surfaced to 1000 grit to make sure everything is perfectly flat before I grind it. Once it's ground and etched it will look a lot nicer. :)

Re: Damasteel blade for under $75?!

The way you pose the question makes it difficult if not impossible to answer directly. I will say, if you haven't checked out Damasteel's Damacore DC18N you should. I am not a fan of Damascus style blades because their performance is generally inferior to the best super steels available today, and I...

Re: Does anyone else wish for a standard scale color other than black?

Generally speaking I prefer to have color on my knives rather than plain black but I'm picky about it. Color has to be done right or it goes all wrong IMO. For that reason I use colors in nearly every custom handle I make but I can't see Spyderco being able to use anything that will be nearly as uni...

Re: 3V or 4V Steel in a folder.

The heat treat video above is a very good example of just how important the heat treat protocol is. This applies to all steels. Changes within the heat treating protocol dramatically affect the steel's performance. When discussing the differences in performance between steels that are similar (e.g. ...

Re: Pakistani knives sold as USA-made customs?

I certainly can't say for sure either way, but those wootz steel looking blades sure look like the cheap Pakistani stuff you can get as blanks (mules) from a lot of on-line sources. That said, what will you accomplish by calling him out if he does buy those blanks and makes them into complete knives...
