Re: Sharpening with or without microbevel.

I sharpen freehand, but have always followed the advice of the person who taught me 66 years ago and increased the angle between the blade and the stone "a bit" for the last stroke or two on each side. Don't know if that counts as a microbevel or not, don't really care either. That's exactly what a...

Re: The most reliable locking mechanism Spyderco uses?

Fixed blade.

Other than that, who knows. Without precise, controlled testing for specific scenarios there's no way to know.

Until they use 3V, CPM Cruwear is the toughest steel available in a Spyderco folder. If this is useful for the Para 3 is another question: only you can decide.

Re: How did ZDP189 go from a stainless steel to carbon steel?

For the same reason that S30V went from premium to garbage steel that chips on everything. People repeat incorrect statements until it's the new normal.

Not as easily as 1095 but it won't take long. Avoid food prep.

Re: Overturning of Knife Restrictions

Anyone can buy a 10 inch chefs knife at Walmart. Seems incredibly silly to ban pocketknives when the more dangerous item has no restrictions at all.

Re: Fist in the Eye

Most of my experience with S30V has been from spyderco. It's my least favorite steel from them. I don't have a charpy or impact tester. All i have is what I've personally seen. S30V isn't that good relatively speaking. I thought spyderco did the mule team project exactly because lab results and the...

Unfortunately it’s out of stock at Spyderco, my preferred dealer, as I get the best price on my purchases.
Spyderco charges MSRP. How are you getting the best price that way?

Re: These videos of knife locks failing.

I like them. Nice to get a visual on what they can take. I also appreciate that someone else wrecked a knife and I didn’t. If you don’t like them, just don’t watch. Easy enough. The problem is they aren't purporting to be solely entertainment. It's not a question of "ignore it if you don't like it....

Re: These videos of knife locks failing.

I just watched the video. The testing wasn't done properly so the data is junk. You can see the whole knife rotating in most of the tests. Damage to the blades means force was being transferred to the wrong location. You can't assume the winch applied force at the same rate since it wasn't controlle...

Re: These videos of knife locks failing.

It's only useful if the testing is done properly and if whatever is being tested actually makes sense to test. Several things to consider: A single sample isn't enough data. Are all the right variables controlled? How is the force applied and where? Is it testing slow loading with a linear increase,...

Re: Cost Cutting on Sprderco's Higher End Models, Why?

Carbon fiber has wildly different material properties based on how it's made. The kind used in race cars isn't what you get in a knife handle. On a knife it's pretty much only for decoration and raising the cost. I've had no trouble with the laminate on my Domino or Gayle Bradley. G-10 is great and ...

Re: Steel inserts on titanium lockfaces, are they necessary?

My Sage 2 doesn't show much wear and I've had it and used it for 6 years or so. If the knife is used as a fidgeting toy opening and closing all the time then you might wear it out eventually. In normal use it should last indefinitely assuming no defects.

Re: Cost Cutting on Sprderco's Higher End Models, Why?

I didn't read the whole thread so this may have been addressed already. I bought a Domino for $180 when they first came out. After they were discontinued I saw them available for $125. At the regular price it was $70 cheaper than the ZT. That's a much larger difference than the op mentioned.

People complain because other steels have a higher number in their name. I don't see any reason to replace VG-10.

You can get 1095 up to 65 HRC. That doesn't mean it's optimal.
