As to video #5 above, there may be nothing wrong with stapling the leather to the wood but it sure feels wrong. Also, melting in compound.. umm.. no. Opinions that may or may not work for others: - You need more than one strop. I suggest three leather ones. One for green compound, one for anything e...

I don't think very many people limit their knife use to cutting a thread or two. Examples of some normal everyday non-kitchen knife use that most of us probably do: - Open hard plastic packaging or cut hard plastic bands on large packages - Open paper/plastic containers (pet food, charcoal, wood pel...

I'm in the back of the class learning about steel / sorta-steel / looks-like-steel-but-isn't. However, watching my ZDP 189 Delica stay sharp while others around it dull is interesting and cool. It's hard to put a price tag on it.

I was OK until I got a ZDP 189 Delica. Even then it would have been alright except for that M390 Mule. Now it's all about the steel and since Spyderco has taken the lead among factory producers in this area, I'm pretty much stuck. Millie CTS-XHP on the way. Millie M390 on order.

Steel is the heart and soul of a knife. There are good designs in the best steels. Not looking to settle for less even if I have to wait. I will continue to use and enjoy what I have in an array of steels, but for new knives I'm looking for something better. Sure as heck not going to pay someone ove...

I like FFG knives. They are better slicers. Don't need the purported extra strength in a saber grind. Still, I can live with either. Will a FFG in a harder steel get more actual work done compared to your VG10? Probably not. VG10 is great in that it's relatively easy to sharpen and stays sharp prett...

Jeez.. I'm still back on how amazing the M390 was. Guess CPM s110V is the one I'm most eager to abuse next.

When my M390 mule arrived, I went through the normal routine with a factory knife on the DMT stones. Followed this with some diamond paste and finally a strop with CrO2. This thing really took an edge. Spent some time cutting some thin cardboard strips (used in starting the charcoal grill) and didn'...

While not providing the answer to your question, thought I would provide some additional feedback. I got the Halpern #4 for my M390 MULE. Good company to work with. They have a nice form follows function look and as much as I enjoy the aesthetic of an artful tool, I don't find myself wishing for fig...

I see two questions:
- Does steel matter all that much?
- Which steel is best?

Yes. If you know to ask, it matters.

ZDP>S35V>154CM.

ZDP should be about the same as your brown millie with CTS-XHP.

Of course.. you could hold out for M390.

She appreciates that I share my purchases with her. While knives are not the most expensive hobby, it's everyone's responsibility to maintain family finances and open communication fosters trust. If you go through life viewing everything as a simple appliance, you are going to miss out on many of the cool things life has to offer. Why have a Delica with smooth operation, quality construction, and competent steel when all you really need is a $8.95 box cutter? Life is short. It doesn't take e...
