Re: Mule Steel to Sprint Run Steel

When Sal takes pity on us steelheads, he looks for a steel that he knows we find interesting.

Re: Worth a warranty claim?

I've stopped worrying about chips. If it chips it chips. Just sharpen and use. same here-- unless it's the tip, I'm a little OCD about the tips... I've even got to the point with edge chips that I continue to use it until it's dull and ONLY THEN do I try to grind out the little chips...I don't even...

Re: S30V or 204P for food prep?

Meh, they aren't biting. Barely staying fed these days. Last year was the best season I've ever seen though. I guess if it was good all the time the good days wouldn't mean anything. I went on a boat/fishing trip last month out of northern New Zealand up to the Great Barrier Island. None of the Kiw...

Re: S30V or 204P for food prep?

You nailed it Chuck. This is the real issue with corrosion in a user. Using lubricants or protectants can help keep the blade surface from rusting but the apex is very difficult to protect and is the first part of the blade to succumb to corrosion. I have a s30v Swick that I loved as a fishing "nec...

Re: S30V or 204P for food prep?

Yup, Nate. Military. Nothing super heavy, either. Just cutting veggies, cheese, bread and the like and also being in my pocket while grilling and used to maybe cut some chicken piece or slice a chunk off the nearly-done tri-tip to give someone a taste. Might even use it as a steak knife, too. Real ...

Re: Nice shiny Bevels??

hand forged high carbon Japanese woodworking tools and kitchen knives are expected to have somewhat brittle edges as delivered and it's suggested that they won't show their best qualities until they have had that outermost layer of steel sharpened away. High tech modern stainless usually doesn't ha...

Re: Nice shiny Bevels??

Hey Chuck, Long time didn't see you ... Still busy with new hobby? Perhaps I'm addicted to the silent sailing through a mirrored edge does on packages, etc. Besides, I shave with my Spydies, so polished is good for me. :o :D Hey Chris, absolutely tailor an edge to your uses. Refined edge is definit...

How does the steel stand up to that thin edge? I really like the way XHP takes a fine edge.

Re: Nice shiny Bevels??

My experience is when I have to do a lot of cutting is that a coarse edge lasts longer than a micron finished edge. If I just wanted to slice open letters and packages(shaping wood also needs a fine edge), I would absolutely go for the soundless cut of a refined edge.

Re: Where did Spyderco claim H1 has the best edge retention?

I'm just wondering. If the H1 work hardens when the serrations are ground, how much metal is hard? How long before you grind away the work hardened metal?
