Re: PRICING

For me its the size of my collection that is the problem. Spending $200 on one tool that you will use every day for the rest of your life seems reasonable. Having a few different versions of that tool for different tasks also seems reasonable. A salt series, a stainless edc, a tool steel/supersteel...

Re: Suggestion for changing Spyderco budget knife steel 8Cr13Mov

I'm pretty sure Sal has said in the past that the polestar and alcyone were designed to see if the market would support better steel on the Chinese made knives. I don't think sales have been good enough for them to expand the effort. ... as "Notsure" mentioned, the market has not responded well to ...

Re: Pocket clip decisions and preferences

Same as a couple of people who posted earlier in this thread, I prefer the spoon clip on heavier knives and knives I actually use for work. Having a little bit of handle poking out of the pocket makes a discernible difference in how quickly I can get a knife out while wearing work gloves. At the sam...

Re: When someone says ''Spyderco'' which of there knives comes to mind first?

The Delica & Endura are the knives that most readily come to mind when I hear "Spyderco". They weren't my first Spydercos, but they were the first Spyderco designs I became aware of way back in the mid/late-1990s.

Hi JR, In Japan, I worked with the grandfather and the father and Eric is working with the grandson. Since 1980. We've been working with our Taipei maker for about 25 years. Eric is now working with the son, I worked with the father. Our Taichung maker was an experienced start up that we've been wo...

Re: Schempp Rock 'Chopper' idea

I know Spyderco doesn't re-release sprints but I'd go for a "Rock Salt Chopper" in H-1—I missed both the original Rock Salt and the orange-handled sprint. I have the Schempp Rock in VG-10 & it's a great all-around camp knife, but I've always wondered how H-1 steel's top-tier toughness (relative to o...

Re: It's Hawkbill Time: Spyderco Units Only Please

My modest collection of Spyderco hawkbills (from L–R: Dragonfly 2 Salt Hawkbill in H1, Byrd Knives Hawkbill in 8Cr13MoV, Tasman Salt 2 SE in H1, Karahawk in VG-10): 20200510_105226.jpg I used to regularly carry the Dragonfly 2 Salt Hawkbill as my trail-running knife but eventually replaced it with a...

Re: Li'l Temperance 3: A (not so) li'l review

Seriously though, after the P3LW, I won't be buying another unlined LW knife in that size range. They just aren't balanced and do not inspire confidence. Heft is necessary sometimes. Not to derail the thread, but if you're looking for a ~3 inch linerless lightweight FRN model with the weight more e...

Re: Li'l Temperance 3: A (not so) li'l review

Edit: For the love of god, if you're going to make it FRN, PLEASE give it full liners! I don't think you have to worry about any future version of the Li'l Temperance 3 not having any liners any time soon. The whole design conceit of the knife is "an MBC-rated folding knife that is legal to carry i...

Re: Li'l Temperance 3: A (not so) li'l review

In what steel would you like to see the next version? I know I've replied to this query before but I'm wondering... would a Li'l Temperance 3 in SG2 be significantly more affordable to produce than one in CPM-S30V since SG2 can be sourced locally in Japan from Takefu? Given the similarities between...

Re: Does k390=end of zdp189?

I have wondered if K390 & SPY27 would end or greatly diminish at least VG-10, ZDP-189, and CTS-BD1N in the Spyderco portfolio -- it will definitely be interesting to see how that all works out, I imagine sales will ultimately be the deciding factor... I think VG-10 will remain a staple steel in Spy...

Re: My Military conundrum.

I suggest buying the one which you are more likely to use & carry. I hate having money tied up in a knife I rarely or don't use. I guess I'm more of a "user" than a "collector" in this way. That's just one guy's opinion, though.

Re: CPM SPY27 steel

I think what a lot of folks are missing in theoretical discussions about SPY27 is that it's a particle metallurgy steel. That's almost as much a difference-maker as the tweaks to VG-10's chemistry: just think of the differences makers & users have observed between CPM-154 (a particle metallurgy stee...

Re: Does k390=end of zdp189?

I know that ZDP-189 isn’t as stainless as some other alloys, but in my usage it’s still reasonably stainless. Is K390 similar to ZDP in stain resistance? I have zero experience with K390. Larrin (metallurgist and the king of Knife Steel Nerds) wrote an article comparing the corrosion resistance of ...

Re: Reflections on the Spyderco Native: My cutting origin story

Welcome to the forum & thanks for sharing your story. I especially liked your description of your reaction to the Native blade shape. Something about the shape of the blade touched me in a distant, ancient place. Perhaps in an earlier life I crossed the frozen Bering Straight. The Native wasn't my f...

Re: What will you be getting from the new reveal?

Definitely getting the Swick 5 and Swick 6 in SE. Maybe I'll get the PE versions down the line. A new Swick has been my most-anticipated Spyderco for a long time and I'm really happy that these have been formally revealed. I might pick up one of the K390 models just to try out the steel... I'm think...

Re: Shallow Lock on Karahawk

Thank You for your reply. I do have the Blacked-Out version. When you said you have approx. 1.5mm of lock bar travel to disengage the blade from an open position do you mean from where you push down with your finger or where the Lock Bar sits inside of the Blade? I measured 0.87mm or (0.034") LIFT ...
