Re: Community Sharpening Journal

I didn't use a full progression, so its ultimate polishing potential still remains to be seen, but the edge came up hair whittling. Also stropped on .25 micron polydiamond spray from Ken Schwartz on basswood, 1st time using that spray too. So far I'm pleased with both, but I'll report back after so...

Re: Drinking the Maxamet Kool-Aid

The fine diamond raises a burr just awesome and it is as easy as sharpening vg10. Sharpening chips happen on maxamet from pushing down too hard! Thanks. It makes me feel better to know that what I've been experiencing is not atypical. I reached out to Spyderco's Customer Support for guidance. They ...

Re: POLL: Choking up on Ricasso or even edge - who does it?

Advocating holding a sharp knife by the blade is no different than advocating holding a pistol to your head and pulling the trigger because you know the gun is unloaded. It's foolishness.

I don't understand this unless there's something wrong with the steel.

Re: COFFEE: Who Drinks The REAL Stuff? Gourmet Beans too?

So who else here is a fan of gourmet coffee beans? What kind of bean grinder do you like? I'm always looking for better equipment>> especially better coffee makers and bean grinders. Let's talk REAL COFFEE shall we  Let's talk coffee. For the longest time I was on a Kona kick. My goto beans w...

Sharpening Maxamet?

Spent the weekend having fun and putting the Manix 2 through its paces. I couldn't wait to sharpen the knife. In my head, diamond plates were the way to go. They were great for quickly removing the metal to straighten up the bevels on each side. But when I expected some sharpness to happen, it wasn'...

Hard pressed to find evidence supporting the cleanliness of plastic.

Re: Cutting boards

Always wood. One is oak the other might be maple. Wood is easy on blades and harbors less bacteria than other materials.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?

Today was the first day playing with my new Maxamet blade, so I wanted to see what it could do. Of course I did the usual slicing up rags and opening bags of grain, but that's just boring stuff. The first test was cutting out main bearing shims for the 1926 engine. I made the shims out of cardboard,...

Re: What is detail work????

I have two styles of Spyderco's, and they both have the finger choil on the blade. They're my favorite knives to carry, but I question the decision to add the choil at the expense of blade length. I'd rather have more blade. If I wanted more handle to grip, I'd just buy a bigger knife. It would be g...

Re: S30V

you look at S30V and go hey man not cool why can’t I get a super sharp edge like Cruwear? Or VG10? That's not been my experience. I only have one knife in S30v. It's a PM2. I only carry it about 5% of the time, as there are other knives I like better. But on the S30V I've created the best edge I've...

Re: Drinking the Maxamet Kool-Aid

it can do stuff s110v can not - like engrave the s110v blade :) Haha! That's funny. the benchmark is a good reminder that most, NOT ALL, but most of the time the factory edge is really not that bad. You're right, but OCD kicked in and I couldn't leave the edge alone for more than a couple hours. I ...

Drinking the Maxamet Kool-Aid

Mr. Postman brought my new Manix 2 LW Maxamet today. Generally, the first thing I do when I get a new knife is whip out the stones, strops, papers, and pastes so I can make the knife "my own." This time around, I decided to try a different tack and use the knife exactly as the manufacturer intended...

Re: Post a spydie and a gun thread

Emptied out my pockets:
Kahr P380, because it goes bang every time.
Manix 2 LW, because I can beat it up and it still works fine.
Streamlight Stylus, because I need a handy light many times a day.
Gerber tactical pen, because it's more fun to write with a cool pen.

Re: Have you had a folding knife open on accident?

Yeah... and it wasn't pretty. It was a Mel Pardue designed automatic made by Benchmade. It's super-thin, super-light, and just right for a rigorous backpacking expedition. The edge was honed to an unnecessary degree of sharpness. I was carrying it without the safety on because... well... who ever he...

Re: Spyderco warranty question

I did not get it because I just figured Spyderco would charge me for the repair, and the whole transaction would cost the same as a new one. To buy a damaged second-hand knife with the intention of having the manufacturer repair it for you for free is pretty skeevy. Perhaps you should pose this que...
