Those nurses were, erm, hot! And I think they really were hot, not what we know in the UK as ‘nine-pinters’ (ie you’d need to drink that amount to find them fanciable). They were also, oddly enough, real nurses. Had they been strippagrams I’d have probably lost the finger, but hey, if they’ve gotta ...

I love my UKPK dearly but it has bitten me too many times for comfort when I’ve forgotten it’s only a slippie, not a lock knife. Funniest was at a pal’s 60th birthday party bash when the drink was flowing and I thought it would be amusing to inhale the helium from some of the balloons hanging over ...

Tenacious quality

I agree with you about the Tenacious. My work brings me in contact with lots of fishing reels, 95 per cent of which are now made in China, Taiwan, Korea etc. Some are better than others, but ALL are better than anything you could buy even 20 years ago in terms of fit, finish and performance. Far ...

What do you call your other half?

Language is a wonderful thing, and the differences in common speech parlance between the US and here in the UK is a constant delight. Here, calling your other half ‘my woman’ or ‘my lady’ is a sort of embarrassed way of saying you’re together emotionally, but not necessarily legally hitched or even ...

Feeling better

Thanks for your replies, guys, I knew you’d cheer me up. BTW, it wasn’t the purchase of the knife but the fact that I showed it in public that caused her indoors to blow her lid. Anyhow, I did get a call from her: said her cat was sorry to my cat for some of the things she said, and I replied that ...

Ever bust up with your woman because of a Spydie?

A tale of woe, am I on my own here or has anyone else had relationship problems as a result of their Spydie hobby? Went to the theatre here in the UK, and at half-time me and my lady each bought an ice cream. They came in little tubs with the spoons embedded in the plastic lids, and these were as ...

In one piece

Thanks to all who wished my little finger well. Took the dressing off and it’s healing fine, no loss of feeling, just a neat crescent shaped scar and no prospect of losing the top of the pinkie. No fear of a repeat incident, either. Anyone seen the film ‘Black Rain’? I have no wish to join the ...

Badly bitten

Well, I’m now a fully initiated member of the Spyderco clan, having got myself well and truly snagged at my brother-in-law’s 50th birthday party. My fault, there was plenty of red wine flowing and a driver was organised to take us to the hotel afterwards, so I may possibly have been a bit wrecked ...

It’s a government-backed diversionary tactic, in collusion with the sensationalist media. Whenever times are hard, what better way to get the people’s minds off job losses, home losses and rising crime of a non-violent nature than go for a sitting duck – the old knife-carrying issue?
Most of the ...

Parasitic wasp of some kind. The ‘sting’ is an ovipositor that she pokes through the bark once she has sensed a beetle grub beneath. She lays the eggs directly into the grubs and they hatch into larvae and feed on the grubs while they are still alive.
Wasps do the same thing to tarantulas, and the ...

BTW, if you don’t need the rechargeable option, the very same torch can be had from Deal Extreme for about $25 shipped – the Cree 3W 1x18650 Flashlight Black (exactly the same spec but not branded Eastward). It’s built like a tank and the clickie switch, so often a source of trouble, is 100% sound.

As a UK member of the Spyderco clan I’m going to upset a lot of Americans by saying that, in my opinion, unless your very life depends on a flashlight then Surefires are grossly overpriced: can you imagine, in the current economic climate, telling the wife that she can’t have her housekeeping money ...

Before I discovered Spydies I always had Opinel pocket knives – they have great blade steel (the carbon is better than the stainless IMHO, the ring collar lock is just about idiot-proof, and if you have the time and patience you can customise the handle (checker the grip, carve the end etc). The ...

Tin whistle! I’ve got six, best of which is a Feadog high D, although the Dixon is also good for the money. Now, if I had the money, I’d splash out on a Thin Weasel which has got to be the ultimate. I can also get a tune out of a chromatic harp. I reckon if I hadn’t been forced to take piano lessons ...

Cry from the heart

In this beleaguered land of ours they’ll soon have us all cutting up our food with plastic spoons, let alone allowing us our beloved EDCs. Hence:

There was a young knife nut from Crewe
Who said: "What am I gonna do?
In this land of the sheeple they don’t like knife people
So my Spydie’s kept hidden ...

I have a ginger cat with the sharpest blades ever in all four paws and in his jaws (All God’s Critters Got Knives – never a truer word spoken). He was feral for four years before he got injured and had to take food from me, and now he’s the best little beast you could hope for – unless you’re a bird ...
