I have Shapton GlassStones in 4k,8k, and 16K. So far I haven't found them to be magic on my straights. Maybe with more practice. The Spyderco Ultrafine seems easier to use so far. My only complaint with the Spyderco bench stones is that the top edges on mine were rough and required smoothing.

One other point: a lot of guys are reporting on other forums that the Spyderco hones have to be lapped to make them flat enough for use with straight razors, and that this is not an easy process.

Yep, I've seen that dicussion. Seems to me if they are flat across the width and reasonably flat ...

They are very different. The Shapton GlassStones are water stones. They are a fine abrasive ceramic grit mixed into a softer matrix binder. The surface matrix erodes away exposing fresh grit in use ...

Spyderco Benchstone review at Badger & Blade

Here is a review from Joel at Badger & Blade of the Spyderco bench stones from the straight razor perspective. Interestingly, Joel knows his stuff but he calls the ultafines 13K to 14K! :eek:
