For folding knives, I've been dressed up ever since leaving college, though I shed the tie a few years into my Ph.D. Somehow teaching high school locked me into professionally dressed habits. I've been very happy with either my stainless steel Lava or my newer foliage green G-10 Dragonfly II clipped...

Emergency trachaeotomy

I thought this was just amazing: a physician performed an emergency trachaeotomy on a choking woman with a friend's EDC knife, saving her life.

And that's why I carry a pocketknife. :D

It's pretty darn stainless compared to some things. I recall D2 being referred to as a "semi stainless" years ago and now certain YouTube folks say that about 8Cr13Mov. It's like H1 compared to old carbon steel from day of yore. Haha, agreed. We get spoiled with all of these fa...

I agree with the statement that ZDP is something like S90V. (I have an S90V Mule and gave my dad a ZDP Stretch a few years back). Both hold an edge insanely long and stand up very well to abrasive media like cardboard. Their wear resistance make both hard to sharpen, nothing like VG-10 for example. ...

You're kidding. In what state is a 3" non-locking blade illegal? Where are you travelling? Believe it or not, it is illegal to carry a >2.5" blade in Chicago on or about your person. Then in New York, the round hole allows a spyder-drop, which has been construed by police as making a :spy...

Greetings from Chicago! I just got back from a work trip to Lake Tahoe. Given that it's legal there, I carried my beloved Caly 3 like it was going out of style. It is unlikely you'd get into trouble with "discreet" carry of a >2.5 inch blade, but I could never endorse violating the ...

Congrats! :) Yep, the Delica is a beauty of a knife. Still haven't gotten one for myself, but I've handled a few that I got as gifts for others. I definitely like my Endura for outdoors use. Unlike some afis, I appreciate the chunky saber grind of the Delica/Endura. Psychologically, it emboldens me ...

Congrats! :)

The (now discontinued VG-10/G-10) Caly 3 was my first Spydie. The Caly 3, to me, is a gorgeous and faultless knife, and I frankly haven't seen a folder in its size range that I like better.

Get a set of diamond sharpening tools (I have four of the DMT Dia-Sharp grits), potentially a loupe to inspect the progress and angle of your sharpening work, and sharpening will be straightforward even for the exotic steels. I've gotten good results with these tools on my CPM-S90V Mule. From what I...

Hi Nonprophet,

Do understand that bevels need not be exactly at a certain spec (or be exactly equal to one another) to cut well. In fact, there are chisel grind knives that are completely flat on one side.

I haven't been around these forums much lately, spending time and money on other hobbies now that I have a good solid set of nice user knives plus some that don't get used much. But I'm glad to see this thread. It feels like forever since I got a :spyd...

Or a Military.

Both are spectacular knives just for fun, though both will ask you to throw in two or three Jacksons with your Franklin.

Its bevel might not be the same as the Sharpmaker default. You have some choices: touch it up at the factory bevel, re-bevel it to your liking, or (if you haven't done any appreciable grinding yet) send it in. Personally I would not be satisfied with a :spyder: with a poor edge out of the box. The p...

For lightweight backpacking, weight can be a major issue (depending on what you mean by "lightweight" ;) ), so I'd go for a smaller blade. I also prefer stainless steel over carbon steel in the outdoors where things can get rainy or sweaty and stay that way. For more sedentary camping, I t...

Hey FLYcrash, Good reply. I wasn't thinking of straight razor use. When I think of knives or cutting tools they would go into the following initial categories: Hatchets (gardening tools), knives for EDC or work, then straight razor (which would be in a different category all in themselves due to ac...
