For those interested here is the patent of the Thumb Plate by Andrew Demko citing Emerson's patent as well with the issuing dates of the patent. https://www.google.co.za/patents/US7036229?dq=andrew+demko&hl=en&sa=X&ei=3cNdVbO1LrKQ7AbugYMo&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAg" onclick="window.op...

Re: Pre-need replacements: Have you ever needed to use one?

I have backups or rather duplicates of some knives, but the main reason I bought them was not as backups, but rather that funds allowed it at the time, though not any more, and I have not purchased any other Spyderco, or for that matter any production knife, in a few years now. Customs, though I wou...

Re: Edge retention of Spyderco's H1 serrated edges?

Thanks ZENITH that is really interesting. I've heard very good reports so far on the LC200N that they use on the TUSK model and I'm wondering if it will prove out to be as reliable as H-1 has been>> I'm also wondering what corrosion resistance properties this new LC200N has or how comparable it is ...

Re: Edge retention of Spyderco's H1 serrated edges?

I was wanting to know if all nitrogen based steels are like H-1? Whereas I was wondering if all nitrogen based steels are "work hardened" like H-1. Also do they tend to be somewhat more ductile and somewhat softer on the Rockwell Scale? Or am I barking up the wrong tree asking on those te...

Re: PM2 scales becoming less grippy over time.

I have not bought a new G10 knife in some time so at this stage all my G10 user knives have worn smooth. It is unfortunately part of the process. Even something with aggressive G10 such as Cold Steel has worn smoother over time. Enjoy it.

Re: Military liner lock – too easy to disengage?

I think some clarification is necessary since a lot of people are throwing around the Military as a so called "hard use" knife. The following are compilation of Sal's post on the Military design. It dates back quite a while: sal Gene - Thank you. The Military Model was designed to be the &...

Re: So what's your favorite steel?

So many steels I love so I am not going to list everything and difficult to state all time favorites.

Nitrobe-77 is top of my list, followed by RWL-34 and Damasteel, CPM-M4 is also up there.

Best bang for the buck: N690, 14C28N, VG-10.

Re: Oiling your knives questions.

A small dab of oil on the detent ball will help until the detent ball smooths out the area it is in contact with. Apply with a toothpick.

I have been using Elna Sewing Machine oil for years now on all my folders.

Re: Pros/Cons of bellied vs straight blades

To answer your question one needs to look a bit more at traditional knives IMO.

A good writeup on blade style and their uses can be read here:

-impact toughness of S90V at 62 HRC is significantly lower than 440C but higher than BG-42 This one I do not understand Cliff. How was the test done? Longitudinal/Transverse samples? What would give S90V the advantage over BG-42? I would think that the higher carbide volume of S90V and "clumpi...

Thanks for your help guys, I will take your advice to heart, well I sharpened/set the knife at hte 40 degrees, and it worked real well, I put some other scratches on the blade  I will try the Scotch tape trick in the future, maybe painter's tape would work the best. Anyway, how do you fix a sl...

Re: December Spyderco Byte . . New Steels on the horizon!

And RWL-34 is a powder steel in the 154CM/ATS-34/CPM154 family? Though with the "Damasteel" designation, does that just mean that Damasteel is who Spyderco plans to buy it from, not that we should expect any kind of damascus? http://zknives.com/knives/steels/steelgraph.php?nm=ats-34%2CRWL...

Re: Spyderedges: Different Blade Steels

Some food for thought. [QUOTE=Sal Glesser;7643022]When Spyderco introduced the "Mariner" in 1982, with a serrated edge, (a Spyderco 1st?) we "pitched" 4 major advantages; 1. The serrated edge gives you a longer edge. 2. Often one uses the point of a knife to pierce the skin of a ...

Re: LC200-n: What we know and what it means

Not pertinent to LC200-N but I wanted to show H-1 PE cutting through chicken bone as well as the wear resistance of 14C28N at low angles. The Lannys Clip in 14C28N = 11.78 Inclusive angle. The Salt 1 is around 12 degrees inclusive. H-1 Salt, not the only bone cutting I did, but my phone's memory was...

Just my 2 cents, but at around $400 I start to look for customs rather than mid-techs as a knife user and collector. At the time of this post I can find, Pat and Wes Crawford, Mel Pardue, Greg Lightfoot, Bob Dozier, Brad Zinker, Jim Matthes for under $400 at one online retailer, never mind if I pick...

Yes please. All of them can achieve high HRC of 62-65 with great edge properties and some developed for the cutlery industry.

But they are not aggressively marketed as 'ultra super cool' 'latest and greatest' so people over look them.
