I highly prefer the idea of making it an accessory to the already proven sharpmaker. Why pay more for a larger system that most people find excessive for regular use? Not to mention it would be replacing the many thousands of sharpmakers out there right now that do more then a well enough job for ...

I have trouble imagining that anyone is getting his knives sharper than a razor, unless it is a razor.

I mean, come on. How is it possible to get, say, a Delica's blade so "scary sharp" that it's "more than a 'razor' "?

Let's think about how thin the blade of a straight razor or a disposable ...

:spyder: If you are in sumbrada range or closer a fraction of a beat means the difference between a successful check with the live hand and cut with the knife or trying to cut and check late and having your fingers cut off.

Thank you for illustrating my point about drama.

I agree with Dr ...

Why is it impossible, genius?

Because it can't fit, genius. You'll never get the bottoms of the adapter posts (which are close together) into the holes in the Sharpmaker (which are farther apart).

That said, it would work fine if you just cut the adapter in half so that the pieces could go in ...

I'm no knife fighter, but it seems to me that some of this "hundredths of a second can make the difference between life and death!" stuff is pure drama.. or marketing copy aimed at the wannabe badasses. Knives are more offense than defense; the fight's not going to turn around just because you're ...

Agree with many of the posts here; you should have stashed it somewhere, or if not, broken it; you certainly shouldn't have told the guy how to close the knife - it's his problem now, isn't it? - and if even the VP is suggesting you should write off a new one as a work-related expense, I say go for ...

It has this sharp piece of metal that's good for cutting stuff, and it folds up so you can carry it in your pocket.

I'll throw my contribution in here...

Here's a knife with some history. I found it near a bunch of stone and gravel piles during a hike in the forest near my apartment. It was mostly buried in the dirt and caked over with mud, so I'm not even sure how I spotted it; it must have been lost for months ...

Even with the Sharpmaker, sharpening is far from automatic.. it's an art that takes a lot of time and practice to perfect.

I got my sharpest edge ever the other day, using just the basic Sharpmaker stones and a quick stropping on a worn cardboard pad; it wouldn't "treetop" a freestanding hair, but ...

If you really want to convince your sailor buddy he needs an H1 knife, have him check out that corrosion test thread ( here ). Meh. If your buddy really wants a knife with a marlin spike, Spyderco doesn't sell anything he wants (AFAIK).

Otherwise, I think the main compromise is cost. H1 is expensive, and 440C isn't.

I suspect that 15 degree back bevel may have something to do with it. Also, I question your sharpening technique if the kitchen knife was noticeably better at cutting and shaving to begin with.

To echo what someone said earlier, if your knife is in danger, then your car is bursting into flame. Don't worry about it.

If you have concern for lubrication, just use something heavier. There are plenty of oils that laugh at summer temperatures.
