My 10 year old likes the Dragonfly's size quite a bit better than the Delica - but likes the Benchmade mini-griptilian even better (purely because it's lock is easier to close). So make sure the particular Sypdie you choose doesn't need a strong thumb to depress the lock. Also, for kids, I'd stay aw...

Dragonfly Upgrade ?

I seem to remember a thread saying the Dragonfly was getting upgraded to screws, adjustable pivot, and removeable clip - but I can't find it... Anyone know when the upgrade is likely to be available ? Also, I can't remember - is the Dragonfly likely to come in a G10 version ? Anyone have a custom G1...

I find I get a significantly finer edge, much faster using just a king-brand (ie: inexpensive) 1200 grit waterstone, than I do with the combination of the brown & white SM rods. However, it's messy to use and requires periodic reflattening - so I end up using my SM for touch-ups. To me, the skil...

Kopa clip

Hi Paul, Is your preference for "no-clip" or "left-hand-clip"? sal Personally, I vote for "no clip" on the Kopa. I take the clips off everything 3" or smaller and carry them loose in the pocket anyway. I think the Kopa's bolsters make it Spyderco's most "gent...

BG42 vs VG10, S30V & CPM D2

I'm thinking of getting an SE Millie. My understanding is that BG42 is essentially just a cleaner version of ATS34. How does it compare to VG10 and S30V in terms of taking a really fine edge, and holding it a long time ? Is it any harder to sharpen to a really fine edge than S30V ? Also, anybody use...

If it's not lint, then try a couple of HARD wrist-flick openings. This will usually seat the lockbar onto the tang of a new linerlock. Yours just might not be broken in yet. Coating the edge of the lockbar that meets the tang with pencil lead (by writing on it when closed) will also usually help sea...

Piercing Ability Comparison

Opening plastic packaging (both clam-shells & bags) seems to be a key EDC task for me... How do the Caly III, Mini-Manix, Paramilitary, and Delica IV compare in "ease of starting a piercing cut" ? How difficult it is to open-up a bag of chips or a candybar (without the blade skipping o...

I generally use 10 to 12.5 per side for EDC duties, but use 15 to 17 per side for camping / tree limbing chopping tasks. 12.5 seems to hold up just as well as 15 degrees for my EDC tasks (which include light whittling, and scraping stickers off metal, etc), but 10 is just so much sharper that it's w...

STR,
How do you think the C3 compares to the D4 ? Heavier duty or lighter duty ? A medium amount or a tiny amount ?

Thanks.

I find the D4 and mini-griptilian actually work just fine as a can opener on thicker tuna-fish & baked beans cans while camping. I've never applied a twisting torque, but pointing the knife straight down like an icepick and slapping the butt-end with your hand to drive it into the can doesn't ca...

I like my sharpmaker a lot better than any other system I've tried - although the edge pro is better - if you have the time to clean up the mess after sharpening ;) I personally find the sharpmaker more accurate than the Lansky, DMT, etc since I can hold the blade vertical with less "angle slop...

Titanium Delica Specs

Anyone have any details on the Titanium Delica Spyderco used to make ? I'm looking for it's weight, steel(s) it was made in, and whether serrated was available.

Thanks.

Anyone know what hardness Spyderco heat treats the D4's VG10 to ?

Also, what's the C3's S30V hardened to ?

Thanks.

I also buy the 20 / 25 base. Maybe Spyderco could package it with some extra-course & course stones that will stand up to heavy pressure better than the diamond rods...

I also like the base to hold 4-5 sets of rods for storage. (Diamond through X-fine).

The pivot / action seems very smooth too me. I can't flick it open at all though... A full arm motion & hard wrist snap doesn't even open the blade 1/8" (or whatever it would take that I'd hear it make a noise when the lock reclosed the partially open blade at the end of my unsucessful flip...

Adjusting Lock Pressure

Is there a way to adjust the lock's spring pressure on the SS D4 ? I see many posts saying people can open their D3's etc with just a wrist flip, so I imagine their locks must have a lot less tension than mine. I've had my SS D4 now for about 4 months. I've open / closed it a few hundred times just ...

You sharpen a Japaneese tooth saw similar to the way you sharpen a Western tooth cross-cut saw. You have to use fine "feather edged" files though, not regular triangular files. It's not that hard (takes about 15 minutes to sharpen a backsaw once you've done a couple). You just need to make...

The G10 usually takes a few weeks to "break-in" so the abrasive peaks (that eat pockets) are smoothed off. Then it stays that way a long, long, time - although it does still wear at a very slow rate. After many, many, many years it will get pretty smooth. I find the rubber inserts on the s...
