Re: Ti/G10 RIL Military with CPM M4
Still looks good. Seems you thinned it out quite a bit. Maybe too thin... I managed to chip it yesterday when I tried to cut off a broken suitcase handle that had hidden steel reinforcing... To be fair, that would have damaged most edges. I had to snip through it with side-cutters. Back to the ston...

Re: Ti/G10 RIL Military with CPM M4
I hate to say but I haven’t used mine much since I had it reground. I remember it was a stretch at the time to afford it but I really like M4 and wanted to try a RIL version of the Military. I’ll have to carry mine again after I dull the 15V Manix 2 I just threw in my pocket today. https://i.imgur.c...

I started my daughter with a Delica trainer, and she liked that a lot.

Re: Please explain "behind the edge" geometry to me
I just got a ganiometer in, and pulled out a couple blades to show the difference in thickness at the top of the bevel on a factory grind and a regrind. The Milirary in M4 has a thickness of .030” at the top of the 8 degree per side bevel. The reground Para 2 in S110V is .008” at the top of a 10 deg...

Re: Please explain "behind the edge" geometry to me
I have heard that Japanese chefs will thin the primary bevels of their kitchen knives when they sharpen them. Over time these knives become thinner and less tall, while optimal geometry is preserved. This is exactly what Murray Carter teaches in his sharpening videos. Most people don’t want to put ...

Re: Please explain "behind the edge" geometry to me
A regrind has even more intense cutting ability. Not many have experienced a crisp flat grind to sub <0.010" BTE That’s the truth. The first time I used regrinds in the sub .005” range it was extremely eye opening. The performance is just on another level. You also need to know how to cut with...

Re: Please explain "behind the edge" geometry to me
You will love it when you get it all the way thinned out. If you spend a lot of time on finer grits you can usually make the blade look pretty decent. I generally just do enough to make it not look too terrible and use them since you are just going to scratch them up anyway if you use them. The Cha...

Re: Military 2. What exactly is going on?
I just reprofiled an S30V C95 tonight and holy **** did it take a nice edge. 200 grit diamond plate followed by an ultrafine spyderco stone microbevel. Wave it a few mm over my arm and arm hairs abondon ship. People that don't like S30V are silly. My C95 responds great to sharpening. It was Rockwel...

Re: Please explain "behind the edge" geometry to me
I generally use trig to guess at the factory angles. I believe the sharpening robot on the Golden Co models are standardized at 17 degrees per side if my memory serves right. Pre sharpening robots most Spydercos I got were between 12-15 degrees per side, generally with close to 15 degrees being the ...

Re: Please explain "behind the edge" geometry to me
Having a knifemaker regrind the the blade thinner is the most convenient, and expensive way to thin out the blade. You can also use an XX Coarse stone hammer at the blade by hand and thin the whole blade out, then run through a couple different grits to pretty up the blade if you care about that. I...

Re: Please explain "behind the edge" geometry to me
To clarify the BTE measurement can be very deceiving if you don’t specify what angle your edge bevel is. A 20 degree bevel will be much thinner BTE than a 10 degree bevel, but at any point along the bevel the 10 degree edge is much thinner than the 20 degree bevel. An extreme example of this are my ...

Re: Preferred Steels for Smaller Knives with Slim Blades
I like AEBL at ~63 RC in my McCullen #1 slipjoint. It was ground to a zero edge before it was sharpened. It takes very acute edges and is an amazing cutter. It takes down cardboard and other light EDC tasks with ease and cuts dramatically better than most pocket knives. I generally carry another lar...

Re: CPM 15V Sprint sharpening and performance thread
Post up some of these knives, 10dps isn't common to see! My personal lowest is around 12-13. Mike was one of the guys that got me interested in thin edges. I used to go a lot lower than I do these days, more like 6-10 degrees per side instead of around 12 dps. Never had durability issues except for...
