Re: A Tern for the Road
It's been my daily EDC for quite some time now. I like it a lot. Spring tension against closing is stronger than your usual SAK, but it still opens smoothly with one hand. Never had the slightest worry about it closing on me. For those who are worried, it has a half stop to keep it from closing on y...

Re: Spyderco Warrior Hawk Axe
Idk anything about hawks, but a carving axe would be cool. The HatchetHawk works great as a carving axe. Indeed, it was one of the things that were part of the design idea. I've used it for all manner of carving already; mainly spoons and edge covers for axes. It's lightweight, balanced, but hits w...

Re: Sharpening tips
Well, it's pretty hard to keep that point factory fresh on a hawkbill. It is the most stressed part of the edge and tends to wear more than the rest of the blade. Thus, you'd have to either grind down the rest of the edge to keep up with the receeding point or you grind down the back of the blade to...

Re: Sell me on a byrd
I EDC the Byrd Tern - if it weren't for the legal issues, I'd still carry my Military - and it has really grown on me. It's light-weight and the ergonomics are spot on; very reminiscent of the Calypso Jr. And most importantly: it cuts. Sure, 8Cr13MoV is a plain Jane steel, along with 440C, Aus-8 etc...

Re: Sharpening tips
If you want to sharpen hawkbills, the Spyderco Pro-Files are pretty good for this. If you struggle with free-hand sharpening, you can clamp the knife to a workbench so that the part of the blade you want to sharpen slightly protrudes over the edge of the bench. Then use the Pro-File like an actual f...

Re: Sharpening with or without microbevel.
As for the original question - if the steel can take it, you can go thinner and/or more acute. If the steel holds an edge well with 15° per side without microbevel, you can try 13° per side with a 15° microbevel. I use microbevels, because they make de-burring an edge easier and they add considerabl...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
I mostly use a pocket stone or a puck to maintain the edge bevel (followed by a loaded strop if I want to use it for carving); until now I haven't had the need to use a file. I've only sharpened the bevel, and, unless I run into a major mishap that takes out a chunk of the edge, I don't forsee the n...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
[...] Love this hatchet! I have only used it one time [...] it was producing uniform oak planks [...] It is a joy to use. I'm a kid, again. I could - and during the development process actually did - write pages about the intricacies of the design, but it seems to me that you already know the reall...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
Truth is that the inability to ever replace the handle is all the reason I need to pass. Hypothetically you could replace the handle if you managed to break it, and that's a big if , but there is always that one guy who can break a greased ball bearing with one hand tied behind the back. The eye is...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
Hi Ookami, No horse. Gail and I live in a forest at 9500' altitude. No tumbleweed or sage. Pine, Spruce, fir and Aspen. sal That's roughly 5800' higher than the highest mountain peak near where I live and more than plenty of material for a mountain man story. ;) As well as ample opportunity to use ...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
Sounds like a big ask to me, to fit a precision moulded frn handle to a forged head, without marring the finish at all. The handle is pressed in with quite a bit of force, so a bit of bulging along the upper edge of the eye is to be expected. The additional gouges/scratches that are present on Bodo...

Keithkevinken has a YouTube video up Thanks for sharing, Keithkevinken's excitement really made my day. Re: Spyderco Hatchet
I would agree completely with you Sal, if basic questions were answered. We don't really even know where the hatchet was made [...] I didn't say anything functional was off. There's no way i could have known that. I said the finishing was messed up. Who messed that up is unknown. I agree, the desig...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
Something I'm still interested in if the cutting geometry is there. Don't worry. I have used the prototype, which has the improved edge geometry, for a wide variety of woodworking tasks. This includes, but is not limited to carving spoon blanks, preparing kindling, cutting up old 1x4" planks f...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
Thanx much Ookami, It did come out rather nice. Works well also. A classic piece, made in the US. sal Thank you for having me on board as a collaborator. And yes, it came out rather nice indeed. The satin finish on the head and the matte finish on the handle really set it apart from the last protot...

Re: Spyderco Hatchet
I recently got the collaborator's sample piece and thought I'd share what you get in the package.
