Hmmm... bats... had this weird dream the other night where I was visiting somebody or other and they had this big pet bat and it was really affectionate and all the time trying to land on me, but it was ugly and scruffy and not at all like those southeast Asian fruit bats that are really good ...

Larger Utility - 1 1/8"

Smaller Utility - 1"

Now I have to figure out what "safe place" I put my bread knife and carving knife boxes in! Aaarrgghh! Why do I do this to myself?!?!

Eriksson #1 - a $10 knife (probably $5 in a store in Sweden), mystery carbon steel, as-issued edge. Not quite in the same class as the Calypso Jr. or the Moki fixed blades for rubber band shredding, but very respectable nonetheless.

I did the rubber band test on a Moki Nami - the Umi's slightly shorter cousin. Twelve separate pieces, if I found them all, and six other cuts more than halfway through. Vorpal.

A Spyderco 6" serrated kitchen utility knife and a fairly heavy duty rubber band scored nine pieces that I could find, plus three more cuts more than halfway through the rubber band that didn't quite sever it. I think the Hattori Santoku, a rather more expensive knife, almost equalled that, if I ...

Spyderco site down?

I had to come to the forum directly tonight through the spyderco.eonbusiness.com url - www.spyderco.com has been getting me a "404-not found" error message this evening.

Hmmmm .... I like the idea of a plain-edge Ladybug for precision work, though maybe it can't do anything that a plain-edge Dragonfly, which is available in North America, can't do as well or better. And any high-security portal that is fearful enough to turn away a Dragonfly will probably turn away ...

I'd go for a Centofante Jr. in pearly G10.

I'm considering the "CF" Civilian an "if" and not a "when," since I've been told it's a wee bit premature for me to go placing orders for them. And getting a special run of several hundred knives from the factory is probably a process measured in weeks and months, not days and weeks.

A couple of ...

Discontinue it, and folks will come out of the woodwork saying "No! No! I want a Calypso!"

And Spyderco's people in charge of making a profit will say "So? Where were you folks when we were making them?"

So it goes.

I'd say to call it the "Recruit," but I don't think I'd be original.

How about "Reserve."

That's, among other things, either part-time military, or a quality of self-restraint, like "Temperence."

I haven't seen or felt such a thing to be sure, but I think the pearly surfaces should have flutes milled into them both for visual contrast and for traction.
