Re: The Ignorance of Steel

It is not so much that I don’t want to resort to diamonds, I am just a lazy person who hates sharpening knives lol. I tend to use it until it is dull and then bring it back to a shaving sharp edge. With the non-super steels i can usually accomplish this fairly quickly vs with high wear, harder steel...

Re: Caribbean Salt serrated leaf blade first impressions

I love mine and I am happy with the comp lock. Back lock would have been a no go for me. It drives me crazy when they develop lock rock. The lack of a choil or ricasso is also a huge win for me. That being said this is probably the folder I would bring with me in a trip around the world. I am tempt...

Re: Caribbean Salt serrated leaf blade first impressions

I recently purchased a Caribbean Salt with a serrated leaf blade .... .... While the knife is slightly larger than my tenacious it is noticeably lighter. ... Congrats! The Caribbean has so much going for it from all I see, and yes, if it had a backlock (or linerlock) I´d certainly have one too alre...

Caribbean Salt serrated leaf blade first impressions

I recently purchased a Caribbean Salt with a serrated leaf blade. I was on the fence with this knife because the serration pattern is, in my experience, the optimal pattern for general cutting chores vs deep, pointed serrations. On the other hand, the handle was unappealing to me with the bumblebee ...

Re: Stippled Stainless

I prefer the smooth slabs on stainless knives. To make them grippier especially with wet hands, i use triangle and round jewelers files to cut about 30 grooves into the Police models i carry from time to time.

Re: The Ignorance of Steel

I have been using coarse edges since the days when Spyderco used ATS-55 and AUS-8. I have never been into super steels and had no problem with the edge retention of H1 or 8CR13MoV. I was cutting a lot of rope that spent a lot of time on the bottom of the ocean and 3 or 4 cuts would dull S30V as quic...

45 minutes with a triangle and round jewler’s file adds gives an excellent grip. The steel handles are fairly soft.

One of my SS Police models.

Re: Older, Past Models To Return To The Salt Series?

I would love to see the saber ground, swedged Police with a blue FRN handle and serrated blade in a Salt config.

Of all the spyderco knives i have carried and used over the years, for some reason I always come back to the original Police as my all time favorite.

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?

The oceans are close to being fished out. While the laws are harsh, an empty ocean is harsher. Too bad all nations do not equally apply the limits. Interesting to see how the coated 8CR13MoV is holding up to sea water. 8CR13MoV is fairly corrosion resistant. Prolonged exposure to sea water will cau...

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?

Ah, a large commercial vessel then, I misunderstood the scale. Interesting: Any mutilation of that flipper makes the lobster illegal to possess. Do you run traps to sex and clip the females, or scuba dive? Are lobsters easy to sex like blue crab? Also, I didn’t know those parts were called “flipper...

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?

So the entire catch (all 120) was seized/released for having one notched? Seems excessive. Not much of a “V” there. More of a “U”. The entire catch was approx 900 pounds. We seized about 280 lbs. There is a zero tolerance policy for taking illegal lobsters. Any mutilation of that flipper makes the ...

Re: What did you use your Spyderco for last?

I used my Tenacious to remove the rubber bands on the claws of 120 seized lobsters before releasing them back to the water. Nice work 👍 Certainly an entertaining post -- mine are usually boring. Are those plastic bands? They are rubber bands to keep the lobsters from using its claws. This catch was...

Re: Knife for saltwater

I have used several different Spyderco and Byrd knives in my 25+ years working on boats in Massachusetts, Florida, Virginia and Illinois. I have found that Plain edge knives are more useful day to day but a serrated edge is always exceptionally handy to have around. I found that carrying more than o...

Re: Knife for saltwater

I used an atlantic salt as a commercial lobsterman for several years. I still carry a serrated Atlantic Salt as a harbor patrol and marine fisheries LEO for on the water emergencies. If you don’t need the point, a sheepsfoot Salt knife will be more than enough for what you need. Hawkbills excel at c...
