Re: HAP 72 or CPM REX 121 Spydie
I do know that. And I did not expect 15v to reach 70+, hence the conversation. I want it to reach 70 comfortably. That being said, yes Mo and V do help toughness in small amounts, and there will be some which isn't consumed in carbides to still do so. Hence the playing with carbon % as the ballast ...

Re: HAP 72 or CPM REX 121 Spydie
Too much cobalt pushes toughness down too far. Too much tungsten will do the same. The idea is maximum Vanadium carbides with only enough W & Co to bring the hardness to 70. 15v has room to go. In fact S30V has more carbides by volume then 15v. 16% cobalt is borderline tooling carbide, and ...

Re: HAP 72 or CPM REX 121 Spydie
What about a modified 15v? Say add tungsten and cobalt, and up the carbon a bit? Moly carbides much like vanadium, adds toughness and such, so a touch more. Think Maxamet but replace some of the tungsten with Vanadium? Custom hyper-steel?

Update: Wilson Revolution ceramic blades, which appear to be the Dalstrong V3 Spectral blades rebranded with black handles.

Re: HAP 72 or CPM REX 121 Spydie
From my diagnosis, REX 121 is the leader. Carbides by volume it's nearing 50% (dependant on heat treat). 15v is great, I like it. I know volume isn't the major factor, but when it comes to exposed in the edge, it can be a significant factor. Three get 70+, S290, HAP72 and REX121. HAP72 is similar to ...

First I would like to say absolutely! Always progress, always advance, always make things better...our country, and our entire society is built on this principle...or we would still be throwing spears, and long ago run out of caves.

Re: The future is now: Ceramic Knives!
Not all ceramics are created equal.
That Rapala knife is a cheap Chinese ceramic that isn't strong. Like the Boker ceramics of yesteryear, they are brittle and fail for lack of bond (sinter) strength.
The color only tells you carbon was or wasn't added to make it black.

Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run
Did some research on these knives and ultra high carbon steels in general. The knives overall get positive reviews and the UHC steels can do some pretty interesting stuff: superplasticity (ductility over 600%), extremely high compressive strength (680,000 psi) with respectable ductility (25 ...

I would gather to say as much. And thank you for the HRC test!!
We should all know that basic (10xx) steels have some so-called trace amounts of the basic trio P, S, Si. Mn is by intention, and additional Si is as well. Still keeping those two to a minimum would help the case of it being Wootz. The ...
