Re: Just Bought Firewall - Cisco Meraki MX67W Security Appliance

I have a fairly large home network...primary and backup storage servers with 80TB each, a shared VM host, an Icecast server, a HPC system for doing fun stuff like ycruncher, and about a dozen standard clients and custom-built HTPCs. My firewall is a Nexcom B533-CX passively cooled signage PC running ...

Re: Lefty Para 2 variants?

RH comp lock on the PM2 is superior to operate left-handed, as long as the clip is installed LHTU. The operation is much more secure and efficient than the finger-thumb pinch close used with the 'correct' handed lock.

Re: Ethical question

Thanks! That goes in line indeed with the quite recent expiring of the comp.lock patent (first comp.lock knife in 2004 (I think), and the actual patent might be a bit "older").

The first model with a compression lock was the Gunting (2000). The provisional patent application was filed in ...

Re: GRX-810

GRX-810 is in the wrong family of superalloys for use as blade material, and it has no carbides. It would also not make a particularly good handle material. It's about 10% denser than steel, and probably has a HRC somewhere around 40 so would scratch easily.

High tungsten stellites like Stellite 20 ...

Re: What knife steel and handle are best for cold weather high altitude hiking?

That's a lower altitude than the Golden factory, and 20F is a mild winter in much of North America. There is no mechanism by which cold and altitude alone would affect the sharpness of your knives.

I've never had a problem sharpening the whole edge on a KME. Just park the side of the stone up against the plunge line.

Here's my Rex 45 Chief...

Re: Blade Length vs Edge Length - Why does it matter?

Blade length is nearly universally the legal test. Stab penetration depth potential is derived from blade length, and most criminal knife attacks rely on stabbing.

Of course, edge-length cannot be longer than blade-length so, as a guide, don’t buy a knife longer than the restricted edge-length ...

Re: My buddy got burned with a fake Manix 2

That's a pretty bad fake. I definitely wouldn't describe those as subtle differences.

BTW, Manix XL (along with most other Golden models) use T10 for the pivot, T8 for body screws and T6 for clip. If you're using something smaller, you're eventually going to round out a screw.

Re: Need help identifying rare C36 Military

As you've already figured out, it's an early example of a C36GBK with dino jimping. It would've been manufactured in the 2005-2006 timeframe. By the time they dropped the Millie BG-42 CF sprint in 2006, they had switched to the modern jimping.

Re: Shaman z-wear authentication

I've seen the fake 'S30V' micarta Shamans with bearings, but I didn't know they were marking any of them as Cruwear. The fake micarta Shamans are extremely easy to spot...basically every fine detail is wrong.

Everything looks 100% correct, including the Sal symbol and the clip. Also, sprints and exclusives don't really get counterfeited.

Re: Linerless Manix 2

I don't think there's much point in a linerless G-10 model, but linerless titanium Manix aftermarket conversions have been around for a while. Seems like a no-brainer for Spyderco to produce an extra thin linerless titanium Manix, which could compete directly with the insanely expensive Benchmade ...

Re: yojimbo trainers

Since Mike mentioned an Aku-Strike product, I'll specifically advice against using Aku-Strike's electronic trainers. They're kinda fun to play with, but they stop functioning correctly when used in a Filipino grip. Thumb pressure on the spine interferes with the hit detection mechanism.

Re: domestic vs foreign

Where the steel is manufactured seems to play a big role.

Models made of US produced steels tend to be made in Golden. European produced steels tend to go to Taichung.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is at least the third run of the Orange XHP Chief. When I got mine I was under the impression it was not the first run.

There has been only one run of the satin XHP Chief, limited to 700 pieces, dropped on 2021-08-20. It's been a very slow seller. There ...
