HoB is right on I believe. I have a military that I've used extensively. There have been times when I thought I scratched the coating but WD-40 takes them off...

The stuff Spyderco uses is very tough. If you want a black blade I think it will stand up under use and serve you well.

There's no excuse for putting an employee in harm's way alone. If things were that tight personnel wise, your supervisors should have been on that floor with you.

If they were leaders, they'd have been in front of you...

If he stole your knife, contact a supervisor and file a complaint against him. If the knife is illegal there, which it probably isn't, it should be booked into property...
