Breaking down boxes with Chaparral

This small knife has surprised me with its great performance at heavier tasks. Today I was out in Minnesota cold, breaking down a few boxes for recycling. Substantial cardboard included Chewy boxes which held ~30-40 pounds of canned cat food and cat litter boxes that don't crush when you jump on the...

Re: What am I doing wrong with the sharpmaker?

Perhaps some factory edges are more obtuse than your Sharpmaker rod settings. Switch from the 30° inclusive setting to the 40° setting. If the edge is still unsatisfactory you may need a coarser abrasive rod to jump-start the process. Congress Tools sells silicon carbide triangular rods. The 1/2" 60...

Thanks to all. I have decided to keep the Delica. Your observations helped me decide.

Delica or Endura ZDP-189?

I ordered a new Endura ZDP-189 but received a Delica (same steel) in error. The vendor will make it right. However I’m looking at the Delica and thinking “hmmmm...” I have an Endura v-toku relegated to the kitchen because of mediocre edge retention. The Delica is small by comparison but seems a bett...

Re: Z-Cut packaging

My wife has used the Z-Cut knives for chopping vegetables. Because of the handle and blade configuration she says she doesn’t cut herself anymore. That’s big.

Re: Z-Cut packaging

I haven’t used them enough to say much. The blade stock is very thin, promising good slicing. The plain edge is sharp, but I’ll hit it with the Sharpmaker for maximum sharpness before comparing it with the serrated. Because of its light weight the z-cut feels insubstantial in hand. No concerns about...

Z-Cut packaging

I just got my 2 knives from REC, one plain, the other serrated. The packaging was spare and ecologically sound, each knife enclosed in plastic on a small cardboard card. The plastic is tough, deflecting the blade of my Chaparral like a phaser shield on the Enterprise. I had to trim around the plasti...

Re: Do you immediately sharpen a new Spyderco?

As I have improved my technique, I have found I can produce a better edge than any manufacturer I have bought from. This is not knocking Spyderco but acknowledging that no maker can produce the edge I want at a price I can pay. I don't resharpen/reprofile immediately but usually do so when the knife...

handsome Reveal 2 catalogue

I want to thank Spyderco and its publications/promotions group for the sumptuous Reveal 2 catalog. Printed on coated cardstock with detailed photographs it reminds me of the best advertising of decades ago. This, like your yearly catalogs, is a keeper. I'm ready to order the Z-Cut series.

Lucky with Manix 2 factory edge

In August my wife gave me a blurple Manix 2 s110v for my birthday. I loved it but put it away, not looking forward to reprofiling it to a 30° inclusive angle. Yesterday I inked the edge, ready for the chore, but the ink completely disappeared and the bevel shone after a few passes on the Sharpmaker ...

Re: Hard truths and observations

Spyderco is not a public utility. Their excellent product is an accessory for men and women, not a necessity. We can satisfy our passion/hobby with other knives, other hobbies, deferred purchase of the Spyderco we want, or whatever else we may choose. After an interval of indignation, my psyche murm...

Re: price increase?!

I'm not terribly upset over the price increase, it seems minimal to me anyway. Just about the only consumer good that I don't see increasing in price as time goes on is gasoline, and that's currently because the supply of fuel is ramping up worldwide and domestically. To me it's more important that...

Re: New Knife Day

My relationship with ZDP is ambivalent. It takes a very sharp edge requiring the entire sequence of Sharpmaker ceramic rods followed with stropping on chromium oxide. I thought I had "mastered" that but tonight while cutting very heavy cardboard concrete forms, no prying or twisting, the apex suffer...

Re: Cost of ZDP-189?

Thanks for providing it, Sal. I have had my Endura 4 ZDP-189 a couple of weeks. The handle and blade fit my tasks. With a primary bevel of ~13-14° and a micro-bevel of 15°, It is as sharp as any blade I have used and has responded to smoothing with the ultra fine rods and chromium on a strop. I know...

Convalescing from knee replacement and needing a treat, I have ordered the ultrafine rods. I'm expecting additional pleasure from the Sharpmaker, a tool without which I'd be lost.
