Re: 154CM - Development, Properties, and Legacy

Love it!

I use 52100 and 440c regularly in my machine designs and it is fascinating to read some of the history surrounding them and other newer steels.

Re: My poor unsuspecting Maxamet PM3

At the time it did not occur to me to look at the rod I was trying to cut. Anyway, all fixed up now. The maxamet sharpened up pretty easily and took a nice polish. I used 18degrees per side, and finished with a 3.5um diamond stropping compund. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1vzKe...

My poor unsuspecting Maxamet PM3

Well, I was eviscerating the remnants of a pinata with my pm3, to make a hat for my son, and was having a surprisingly difficult time cutting through a specific section. Turns out there was a 1/16" steel rod forming the structure inside the cardboard. Of course I didn't realize this until after...

Re: Para 3 Maxamet

I know this is off topic but I can't imagine maxamet is worth the 50 dollar difference between the s110v manix LW and the maxamet lw. Can it really be that much better than s110v? From what I've read the cost difference could be down to the difficulty in manufacturing with maxamet or yield issues.

Re: Para 3 Maxamet

I already broke the point off and made several chips down the edge. Nothing that can't be fixed on my sharpening bench. Given how hard Maxamet is I expect to sacrifice on toughness. Also, I work on metal parts a lot so my knives suffer the consequences.

Re: Para 3 Maxamet

I did a quick hardness test at my office of the maxamet para 3. Came up @ RC68, not too shabby. You can see the very small indentation from the probe to the left of the spyder laser mark. Probably should have tested closer to the edge... Oh well. I wonder what RC value Spydeco was trying to hit? I w...

Re: Is this repariable?

Worst case, they have to drill the screw out and install a small helicoil to restore the thread diameter. It can be done.

I had this same question last night as I was eating some pastrami. Maybe Delica is short for delicatessen?

Someone has to know the truth here...

Re: Para 3 Maxamet

It is real! Ergos are very similar to my old pm1. The blade has a gorgeous stone wash, with an almost glass like feel to it (identical to maxamet native 5). All non cutting edges on the blade are radiused, including the spyder hole. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1haSMvcnrqWfLslF...

Mine is coming tomorrow, 1st pm3 for me. I'll do a comparison picture with my 13 year old PM1 when it gets here.

Re: Are there two hand opening locking knives by Spyderco?

Here's an idea that I think might satisfy. It allows for a normal leaf shaped or pm2 blade profile and a full sized properly located spydie hole with no requirement for occlusion of the blade while in the closed position. The notion is to have the bottom portion of the handle fully sheath the blade ...

Re: Mantra 3 mixed feelings

Wouldn't the steel compression lock be stronger? As for coolness and that premium feel combined with practicality, that's what the CF under the peelply texture is for :D I think it would be Ti scales and steel liners for strength and wear resistance. Although they could do a compression framelock, ...

Re: Mantra 3 mixed feelings

FWIW I caved and got an original Mantra. Pivot and bearings feel fine after some lube and work in. The M4 is a joy to sharpen, takes such a nice polish. Once the Mantra 3 comes out maybe the upgrades and compression lock will be enough to sway me. Time will tell.

Re: Cupped washers

I just took apart my Domino to examine the washer situation. They are very similar to the advocate, so thin :( Anyway, I took my calipers and did some measurements of the washers and the pivot diameter. The washer was ~0.004"x0.2125"x0.4335", the pivot diameter was 0.2110". So, t...

Re: Mantra 3 mixed feelings

After a night of ruminating it seems that since I already own the Sliverax the Mantra 3 is too similar to warrant a purchase without the M4. Maybe I'll cave down the road ;)

Re: Mantra 3 mixed feelings

I don't own a Mantra yet, but to forego hardened wear surfaces and the compression lock of the Mantra 3 for M4/liner lock is a hard choice for me. I've had good performance from my S30V knives (no doubt as this is now the default steel for most makers), but my go to M4 blades sharpen to another leve...

Mantra 3 mixed feelings

I have been carrying a Sliverax for the last few months and really dig the flipper/hole/compression lock arrangement. When I saw that the Mantra 3 was getting beefier bearings and a compression lock I thought I won the knife lottery. Sadly, a steel swap from M4 to S30V may keep me from purchasing it...
