Hi Jim you write: "IMO, it pays to not stand out; to fly under the radar as much as possible, and to have an awareness of the environment. Those are WAY more important than which martial art(s) you may have studied, or how much weight you can lift. Whether ‘standing out’ means being flamboyant,...

The Spyderco crew will not travel to Europe in March. Thus, the annual Amsterdam Spyderco meet is off the schedule. We are very sorry b...

Re: Re-examining 9Cr18Mo as an option

Hi araneae, Yes you are right it is one of the titanium models. I checked with a magnet and even the Pocketclip is Ti. This is a very early example from the very first attempts of Spyderco to have production of more affordable (Instead of Cheap!) knives produced in China. This was before the Byrd li...

Re: Re-examining 9Cr18Mo as an option

Many, many years ago, when Spyderco was introducing their More affordable Byrd line made in China. 9Cr18Mo was indeed a chinese steel Sal was testing. For this testing just a few Catbyrd mules were made with this steel. These were the early ones with the linerlock and the 50/50 forward finger choil....

Re: Really happy with my first byrd

Hi Lunamix, yes, the 3 titanium Byrds are just fantastic in built and in performance. It is typical for Spyderco to come up with something so well built, with such a top notch quality and so out of the ordinary! These 3 Byrds are hierloom pieces.... No doubt in my mind about that. Basta! Needless to...

Re: Current Blade Steel on Spyderco Cat? spec sheet vs etch

When studying the Spyderco steel chart, it shows me that BD1 consists of 6 elements and the BD1N has 8 different elements. It is also clear to see that all other elements in BD1N are all higher in volume. After checking the character of the additional elements it shows me that BD1N is clearly more c...

Re: HOW exactly do you experience, differenciate and evaluate different steels?

Hi Wartstein, Good question. Spyderco has a great "Edge-U-Cation" section in the Catalog and on the Website. To find it you go to: 1. Egde-U-Cation, 2. Steel terms (catalog page 194) 3. Steel elements (catalog page 195) These two pages are simple and well written. They will tell you all ab...
