Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run
Oh and I nearly forgot. when I put CPM MPL-1 up on the front of the forum on “CPM MPL-1 sprint run. Yes please !. I mentioned I was going to buy some of the powdered CPM MPL-1 steel and make my own canister billet which I’m also working on. It’s very demanding because I can’t let oxygen get in whils...

Re: UHC - Ultra High Carbon steel sprint run
Hi there MasterChiefPink. Yeah I did test it. It’s rockwell is 65.5 HRC Which is around what I expected. It’s really good steel especially for a billet steel and but it’s properties really was no surprise to me how ever I’d give anything to know exactly what it’s elemental makeup is. We all know it...

Re: CPM MPL-1 sprint run please
That's actually what seemed interesting too. Based on the numbers you gave, ZDP-189 is still almost 75% iron. And people talk about how ZDP isn't technically a steel. That thing is close to iron not even being the main ingredient! Yeah it’s something that requires investigation but I have very limi...

Re: CPM MPL-1 sprint run please
Taking the low end of each %, that is only 58.9% iron! Just thought that was interesting. it is a very interesting and intriguing highly alloyed metal and it has a lot of potential. That carbon and chromium as well as the other alloys could easily get this steel up to the mid 60s on the Rockwell an...

Re: CPM MPL-1 sprint run please
The have it available for powder form Used in Cladding to low alloy steel "Cru-Clad" Mpl-1 on the outside to prevent wear with a core steel of a more ductile substrate, low alloy, non knife grade, industrial steel. Boring non knife stuff They also mentioned difficulty making Mpl-1 into ba...

Re: CPM MPL-1 sprint run please
I was just looking at crucible steels and I came across the CPM MPL-1 Which looked very very interesting. It has one of the highest carbon contents of any steel and a whaking load of chromium which is up to 24.00% to 24.20% and is obviously to keep the 3.80% carbon in check. It reminds me of ZDP-18...

Re: Hap40 Question
I received a Hap40 Delica Wharnie with a fairly wonky lamination line on one side. This will be a user and I don’t obsess over perfectly pretty lamination lines, but it makes me ask: if one were to sharpen all the way to or past the lamination line, is there Hap40 at the core throughout the entire ...

Re: Sal SM-100 mule knife ?
Hi Sal, Thank you for the reply. The only reason I’d go to a custom knife maker is because Spyderco did not produce a knife in that steel or as you mentioned to get a customised knife but you can customise a Spyderco knife to a degree with various clips and so on but my first choice every time all o...

Re: Sal SM-100 mule knife ?
We'll try to get a piece and make a knife with it. sal Hi Sal, Please could you let us know how you get on with it ?. I have a custom SM-100 folding knife which cost £450.00 which is around $605.00 but I’d take $100.00 off for shipping to the U.K. but there are custom knife makers making them far c...

Re: Sal SM-100 mule knife ?
This came up some time ago and if I remember correctly Cliff Stamp chimed in claiming that while SM-100 can achieve hardness similar to blade steels that it was a quite brittle in comparison. Then there needs to be an SM-111. Is it possible for metallurgists, blade freaks, and one absolutely random...

Re: HAP 72 or CPM REX 121 Spydie
I’m not an employee of Spyderco but I think the fact that they have now launched Maxamet into full production gives reason to give one the thought that they are now probably testing Rex 121 in house or may be HAP 72 because they are always pushing the limit of manufacturing tech, finding new ways to...

Re: (Q) should Spyderco publish there Rockwell Hardness of there knives or should they do a “MAX’ line where they harden
Personally I own one Rockstead in YXR7 and I didn’t want ZDP 189 at a very hard harness due to edge stability issues. I’ve gave my yxr7 Rockstead a lot hard use and it still shaves and whittles hair but I really couldn’t use it to its full potential as it is a high speed steel designed to cut metal ...

Re: (Q) should Spyderco publish there Rockwell Hardness of there knives or should they do a “MAX’ line where they harden
Well thanx everyone it’s just good to know these things as it makes me a more informed customer better able to make decisions based on what I need and not what I want. As far as heat treats go I think it’s based on what you are going to be doing with that blade and the requirements for the hardness ...
