Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

That would be a nice set.
I'm always on the lookout for blonde horn but so far, none I like at a reasonable price.

I have 5 of a 7 day set of George Wostenholm razors, Wed-Sun. Just cheapies with plasic handles, 4/8 blades, no case.

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

I think the weight of the blade and curved edge also contributes to a smoother shave. Along with that is easier maintenance and way less prone to cracks. As far as I know, none of the makers do them like this anymore, and haven't since around 1900. I geuss when they're gone, they're just gone. If Sp...

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

You should try a near wedge razor.
Just as I can't go back to a DE, I can't go back to the thin hollow grind as long as I have a thick blade available.

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

I hadn't used my Razorock Game Changer .84P double edged safety razor in well over two years. I decided to get it out and use it. It is a really good looking razor. It's stainless steel has good weight and is made right. Everything is crips. I put in a really smooth and sharp Nacet blade. The shave...

Re: J.Rodgers & Sons Pocket Bowie

I’ve read that about 1890 was when England required country of origin labeling on manufactured goods. If that’s right, this knife pre dates that, as it only has Sheffield stamped on the tang.

Re: Shaving Soap\Can Foam Blues.

Stirling naked and smooth soap.
Lathers good. Plenty slick and cushion, confident shaves. Closer shaves than beeswax mix. No burn or irritation. Not dry afterwards, but not as moisturized as MWF.
I would buy this again.

Next up, the sheep formula.

Re: Fresh Fish At The Grocery Store

Unless you caught it yourself or buy it straight off the boat, there's no way to know.
Same with any food.
That's why I've hunted, fished and gardened all my life, with minimal grocery store visits.

Re: Shaving Soap\Can Foam Blues.

Got the Stirling’s in yesterday and tried out the beeswax formula. It whipped up in half the time it takes mwf but only made about half the volume and didn't use as much water. The lather looked good, glossy sheen, creamy yogurt, few bubbles. The shave was smooth, slick and I thought confident. At n...

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

How did cowboys, explorers, and others maintain their straight razors so far from civilization? Not all wore beards. Many men shaved. Did they pack a leather strop, a set of sharpening stones, etc? For certain they packed stones because they had to sharpen ax and knife. Those are too coarse for a s...

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

It weighs exactly 2 ounces. The Wostenholm is 1.6 oz, Colling 1.3.
It is well balanced, just forward of the pivot.

Got it honed up, takes a very good edge.
So far it's delivered good shaves.

Re: Shaving Soap\Can Foam Blues.

I like Stirling's "Unscented with Beeswax" but I have the same issue with not getting a very close shave with it, though I don't get razor burn with it. Thanks for the info, I just ordered all 3 of their unscented shave soaps. MWF works great for me but if I can find another that performs...

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

It's barely hollowed, I'd say a near wedge. The blade is hefty compared to the other 2 I use.

Been using D.R, Harris soap lately. Not very happy with it compared to Mitchells wool fat. Not nearly the cushion or slickness.

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

Took another chance on an old ebay razor. It's a near wedge with barber notch and I think celluloid handle. There are no hone marks or any sign of use. These style blades and markings usually pre-date 1870. It has some staining and light pitting. $25 to my door. Tang is marked: Frederick's Celebrate...

What is it about a brush that makes it better for lathering than another brush. How absorbent the bristles are, stiffness of the bristles, etc ?

Re: Anyone use a Straight razor/Artist Club razor/Shavette razor?

Well, I've got a Kamisori type razor coming from S.K. Colling. It will be a while, yet. Still, I'll be glad to get it. How will you protect the edge when stored. Does he provide some type of guard? I haven't figured that out, yet. This is a first for both of us. I'm his guinea pig. :grin-squint Tha...
