Ken and Joe

My point is and seems to be accepted by your responses the “Bushcraft” Knife has taken on a persona of its own and is a particular style of Knife. Where it once had a generic meaning it is now sectarian in other words the “Bushcraft Knife” is a Specialist Knife.

Whereas the term ...

I've come in on this thread rather late but thought I would put in my 2 cents worth given that I have given the "Bushcraft" concept some thought of late as IMO the concept is foreign, in many ways, to Australia. "Bushcraft" to me is living in the "bush" and making best of what you have at hand and ...

In Australia to my knowledge no state has a ban of locking blades as such but IMO there is a public conception that equates locking blades with "flick knives" - I have had this often to me when selling at markets. On the other side of the coin we do have one state which outlaws "one hand openers ...

I've had my UKPK, for all intents and purposes a "slipjoint" just like Grandpa used, for some time now and it has never let me down. The S30V blade holds up well just like the blade in my Paramilitary. I bought mine more out of sentimental reasons having been brought up on slipjoints and it is good ...

As far as PE is concerned it looks like one has to decide between toothy feeling and longer edge holding capability. This does not mean the big serrations of SE blades (spyderedge). But I guess a S30V SE blade with a polished edge will hold the edge longer than the same blade with a toothy ...

I seem to recall an individual that tested a Native (C41) in S30V against another Native (C78) in VG-10, both were plain edge and I believe the fellow was an Aussie. His findings may have been posted in the Spyderco section of Blade Forums but I am not sure.

Too true. In edge retention I have ...

I think the reason production knives are not convex is due to lack of skill/patience with the general user. They want a quick touchup when the knife gets dull, not sitting there removing material from the entire bevel to create a whole new edge when they destroy it.

The other reason is that ...

But I would think the advantage of both the saber grind and convex grind would be that they give greater rigidity to a long blade by retaining a greater volume of steel for any give blade than the others. But, since I can only see that as beneficial in a sword, what other benefit does it provide in ...

Thanks for the link to Sal's thoughts. My "wish" is probably "pie in the sky" given the cost of producing a true convex ground blade. Of course all blades can have the edge convexed, and many end up that way more by default then intent, but a true fully convexed blade can be a delight to use.

Please note I said S30V was the best steel used by Spyderco - there are other steels not used by Spyderco that are better than S30V. In relation to ZDP189 it still has to be proven it may well prove itself to be better than S30V but until such time as we have a knife the size of the ParaM or larger ...

Yes I have had a Calypso Burgundy and yes its edge retention was impressive but this is the first knife produced by Spyderco in this steel - I would want to see it in a knife the size of a ParaM or larger before I made any decisions on its toughness especially. Also the Calypso was only a laminated ...

Convex Ground Spyderco

For those of us who like Convex Ground knives Spyderco might like to give consideration to producing a true convex ground knife. Something like a MiniManix in .187" thick 440B steel would seem to be appropriate.

Since it is illegal here to carry a knife for SD I can't comment except to say that if I was faced by an enraged Kangaroo I would rather have a Chinook II or a manix then my Delica.

S30V - the Best Steel Yet!

IMO the jury has been out long enough to declare S30V the best steel yet used by Spyderco. No other steel has been able match its combination of edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance. None of S30V’s predecessors come close.

In saying this I note that S30V is no miracle steel which ...

Because I need too simple as that. I normally carry at least 3 or 4 ranging from a Vicnox Classic on my keyring, a leatherman on my belt, a Spyderco in my pocket often a fixed blade. The work I do and the environment I live dictates the wearing of a knife but even if I wasn't in that situation I ...

Using a set of verniers my Paramilitary measures 2-15/16" from the ricasso to the tip (IE the cutting edge) and 3-5/32" from the handle to the tip. The cutting edge measurement is the same as what Spyderco puts out but the OAL blade length which Spyderco uses on my blade is from the bottom of the ...

"Sheeple" does not only refer to those who are "anti-knife" I have seen it used and use it myself to that group of people who rarely think for themselves or follow the mob (esp., media and media commentators) like sheep do. To me it is a derogatory term to those people who will jump on a popular ...
