Re: MT46P/MT46S - Mule Team™ MagnaMax™ Release Info!
SE Sold out 11:06.
Yeah...Paypal got hung up on going back to vendor and my first two attempts didn't go through. Third one worked, but SE was sold out. Interestingly, at exactly release time, there was about 15 seconds where the SE said sold out, then the add to cart button appeared. (I only ...

Re: MT40 HIC
I have tried sharpening extensively. You can find my methods and images in the sharpening thread. After extensive testing across many methods, I have found the only reliable way to sharpen to extremes (not fully documented) was to use very high grit diamond or CBN. CBN takes longer, but is a little ...

Re: Mule Team Dreams
Welcome to forums!
S290 has been brought up previously, and Sal was going to look into it. Looks like a fantastic mule candidate, but could be difficult to work with generally. Although, if anyone can, it's Spyderco.

Re: What did you use your Mule Team for last?
I last used my AEB-L mule to skin and process a 30lb beaver. Pics are too big to upload even after extreme cropping though...
I have processed 7 so far this year. The AEB-L needs a touchup or two on each animal to keep it clean-cutting and safe, but so far so good.

Re: Most requested re-release?
I would position the question differently, which may get more traction;
"Is there a mule release that had issues, but with current knowledge could be improved on and re-released as a 2.0 version?"
I recall a few models with issues like warping, or heat treatment being sub-par. No specific recent ...

Re: Thoughts on s290 as a Mule candidate?
Thanks for the update Sal. Maybe there isn't much demand, so production is limited, driving up cost? I'd be happy to cover that test piece cost for you to play with it.
If a test piece is that pricey, I wonder if the economics might be in question for a mule run, even accounting for volume pricing ...

Re: Thoughts on s290 as a Mule candidate?
Y'all beat me to the specs request from Sal, but glad to see some interest! I had not seen the grindability rating, but based on the composition and high W content, suspected as much.

Thoughts on s290 as a Mule candidate?
This one looks interesting, similar to other super tool steels, but the composition is a bit different, with higher W and Co, which is interesting. I have never seen a knife made from it, and there isn't much out there except Bohler spec sheets and a few mentions by Dr. Thomas.

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
I too would like a broken piece for SEM if anyone has any to spare. It doesn't need to be as small as Hewn's.
Hewn, what model do you have?
We have a phenom, It can take samples larger than that but that’s the size of the “sticky tiles” we have to mount samples on.
Nice, we also ...

Vera,
I think you assume too little of this community. Having a material science engineering degree is, frankly, not that uncommon in areas of niche metallurgical discussion. A sure-fire way to inhibit constructive dialog is to assume superiority, whilst potentially insulting the audience.

Re: The best "worst" serrated knives I have ever owned.
I craft end-grain wood cutting boards, which is what is used in our kitchens almost exclusively.VeraX_Knives wrote: ↑Mon Apr 15, 2024 10:10 amThis is interesting. You use nylon 3,3 or wood? Or polyethylene/teraphalate?
I imagine they would create a bunch of micro plastic shavings on any plastic board as well. Yum, right?

Re: The best "worst" serrated knives I have ever owned.
Won't someone please think of the cutting boards? Those microserrations are the nemesis of my fine boards. I got a couple little free paring microserrated knives when purchasing Spydercos online....they are now banned from the kitchen, and relegated to garden or garage work. Even then, in 90% of ...

No one here has mentioned trying diamond film. That's what Tom uses to sharpen his ceramic. Diamond film on acrylic blanks, 1"x6" plates. I have a worksharp professional precision adjust that ill be using. I ordered the 45 micron, 15 micron and 9 micron diamond films and also a nanocloth strop ...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
Also, for giggles, I tried to see if I could use my hardest waterstones to do anything, maybe polish, or rid myself of some of the toothiness. As expected, absolutely not. Don't even bother.
I got a nice mirror polish from my Shapton Kuromaku 2k. It seemed to get a lot of the micro-chipping ...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
Ok, I decided to give it another go on manual sharpening this material. After the first session, I think I did not change my technique enough and was likely applying too much pressure in general. So today's plan was to do a 16k (1um) stropping on how I left the Rahven, and check under the scope ...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
My resin bonded are Venev Orions. They aren't cheap, nearly $60 each.
(1) What concerns do we have about wearing out expensive stones while sharpening this mule?
(2) Will anybody attempt to reprofile to a different edge angle? (Guessing not.)
I did not consider this with diamond, but my ...

Re: You got your Ceramic Mule. How you gonna sharpen it?
Ok, here's some anecdotal info on the material. Before diving into sharpening the mule, I had a go at my Rahven kitchen knife.
First, I have traditionally done all my sharpening by hand on waterstones. So take anything posted here with that in mind. Second, this material is stupid-level hard, and ...
