Re: Best Spyderco value

Honestly if I were looking for value I'd buy a Buck or Schrade. I carry a Spyderco because it is high quality, great steel and heat treat and it works the way I like to carry. Value is not a consideration.

How about a sharpening stone instead.

Buck trapper. The only lockbacks at the time were Buck 110 and switchblades.

Mine came back "sharpened" on a belt grinder. Looked like 36 grit. Worst job I've ever seen.

Any blade play and the knife goes into the trash.

I've been trying to get through this but unfortunately the "Get Verified" button is disabled and they do not respond to emails. It sure works great on the seller side.

Re: Do you ever wish you only had 1 knife?

When I find a knife I like, I carry it until it is worn out. I would only switch if I were able to find the right knife. I know exactly what it would be but I may have to make it myself to get it.

Re: Re: Name a Spyderco knife you thought you would like but didn't once you owned it.

Manix 2 lightweight. I've always been very fond of true leaf blades because of the ability to pinch grip the blade. This was my first finger choil, first FRN and first tip up only carry. Turns out I hate all three.

Re: Best Spyderco to Carve a Pumpkin?

Honestly this is one place where a knife is not the correct tool. I use a piece of 1/4" bandsaw blade with a warncliff point.

I had the same problem. I filled the pattern with epoxy to get a sliding surface. It looks awful but works way better.

Re: How did you discover Spyderco?

I think the year was 1984 when I went to a demo where I could try out the 454 Casull revolver. Sal was there with two knife models. I chose the worker due to price alone. It took me about a week to decide to grind off the Spyderedge but I was definitely hooked. I've never been a collector but noneth...

Re: stainless steels

One thing I discovered over many years of tool design is that heat treat and final hardness can have a very large effect on corrosion resistance. I can't say for sure that all steels will respond that way. Spyderco blades are tempered much harder than European blades I've handled so it is not surpri...

Re: Why does CPM S90V get such high marks?

To me the difference is enormous. I had a very difficult time getting a proper edge on S90V the first time and then after it came back from the Spyderco shop I had to do it all over again. It about drove me nuts. S110V is a breeze by comparison. I didn't like the knife so I don't know if it would ha...

Re: Choils on Spyderco Knives: Ups and Downs?

I detest finger choils. If you need more handle length then buy a knife with a longer handle. Why waste cutting edge. The choil catches what I'm cutting. It reduces leverage. It makes sharpening harder. If you need protection for your finger when closing, your closing method sucks. A properly design...

Re: H1 and heat

The Spyderco site leaves out a rather important feature of age hardening steels such as H1. Age hardening means that it is hardened through a low temperature soak instead of the high-low tempering process of normal hardening steels. It can also withstand very high temperatures with very little degra...

Re: Love at first sight?

I believe it was around 1983 when Sal showed up at a shooting event with two models. I bought the Worker immediately. I don't recall what the other one was but it seemed overly expensive at the time. The only other one that caught me that way was the original Centofante. Still a great knife.

Speaking from total ignorance of the material characteristics, I would back your abrasive with a hard surface to avoid undercutting and an uneven finished edge.

Re: Where Spyderco Knives Fall Short

As an engineer I am bothered by anything that is inefficient but it isn't enough to worry about until it gets to the point of looking wrong. I'm talking about knives like Alcyone or Dragonfly. It is just one more reason I dislike finger choils.

Re: After carrying the UKPK...

I would love to try a slip joint Spyderco. Unfortunately in my jungle like environment in East Texas I use my pocket knife for hacking on a regular basis so any knife with a finger choil is a non starter for me.
