zdp-189 edge question

Speaking in particular about zdp-189 - Is the leading edge (cutting edge) heat treated differently than the body of the blade? Hypothetical - If I had a delica zdp-189 and I wanted to reshape the leading edge to a wharncliffe - would the new leading edge (the wharncliffe edge) have the same hrc as t...

Re: Scale Materials for potential Kopa run

One additional thought - stabilized conifer cone. Quite a dramatic look. If you've never seen it, Google "stabilized pine cone knife scales". Would be super special if the cones came from trees on Spyderco's property, or the Glesser's yard, or the yards of some of Spyderco's employees. Fi...

Re: Why hasn't Spyderco registered with eBay's VeRO Program?

How does one spot a fake? I try to stay informed, I try to keep the old adage in mind - 'if it sound too good to be true, it probably is' -- even with that being said, the 'consumer is likely' to be taken advantage of sooner or later if the copyright holder can't stop the many clones which seem to b...

Re: Scale Materials for potential Kopa run

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r152/datan070973/cutlery/Spyderco/Kopa/DSC_0533.jpg Those are some mighty fine looking scales - I'm partial to the wood (organic) - but it demonstrates the many possibilities for new and shiny scales. I've already indicated my fondness for Damascus -- a new and un...

Re: Materials for potential Kopa run

And I can appreciate those who like Damascus blades, it's just never been my thing. Damascus blade will only complicate things. Some people like Damascus and some people don't. Even more, some of the people, who like Damascus will not like chosen pattern. I think that to make things more simple I w...

Re: Materials for potential Kopa run

I personally think the focus should be on the scales, not the blade, so I'm not a big fan of damascus on these. But that's just me. For the scales, I think some Mokume would be awesome. Here's an example in the bolster: http://www.gpknives.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/800x/3d3f317666956e...

Re: Materials for potential Kopa run

Nothing would convince me to pry my wallet open faster than a Damascus Kopa with cocobolo, burl or some other medium to dark colored wood with a unique grain. Snake wood and leopard wood also look very interesting. I'm right there with ya Ron! I second all these folks who are speaking to natural ma...

Not to forget the original string that started this discussion was -- the making of a Damascus Kopa to which I 'believe' -- "sal wrote: Hi Jerry, I must say that we have gotten some very nice samples from them recently and so I'm thinking positively. sal" Deacon covered it well -- truth is...

Re: Kopa nut

The Kopa was designed to explore varieties of handle materials. The project was halted because the maker was not able to work with the materials that we wanted. So just for the sake of discussion; let's create a list of materials that could be possible. sal Stabilized woods: Masur Birch, Snakewood,...

Re: Kopa nut

I carry my Kopa in a watch pocket, so clip is just adding thickness and makes less comfortable carry. If you remove a clip, this will expose a recess in the bolster and screw holes, which do not add beauty to the knife, but make it ugly. Also I do not like a clip idea for gents knife. a I would agr...

Re: Kopa nut

',,,,,,,,,,, best news, which i heard in a while. GO clipless Kopa. Clipless? Personally - no matter how small, I don't care for a knife loose in the bottom of my pocket (I also find the bulky car keys of today to be most uncomfortable loose in my pocket also). I have a few kiwis and as small a they...

Thanks for the feedback Sal.

I was recently able to buy a giraffe bone Kopa (replace the one I lost) - it hasn't even gotten here yet.

Re: Kopa nut

The problem with making new Kopas not in depressing market, but inability of Moki to produce Kopas per Spyderco standards. I admit my lack of literacy concerning mfg processes & the who of mfg. Who is Moki and why are they building knives if it is the belief that moki can't build to spyderco st...

Re: Kopa nut

Great feedback!.. I know there are a lot of Kopa fans out there & I had heard of Sal saying there would be no more. Good thinking on Sal's part - he knows that an equal amount of Kopas put on the market would likely depress the price of the Kopa overall. I would agree - if - Sal were to simply m...

Kopa nut

It's been a while since I last posted - I had (have) lost my giraffe bone kopa which was given to me as a gift. I haven't been able to replace the giraffe bone kopa yet - but, I have gone a little crazy gathering up knives. Along with kopas - I've gathered a few more knives - including a couple of D...

Re: What steel stays hair whittling sharp the longest?

Just an observation. Vivi asked, 'What steel stays hair whittling sharp the longest?' In looking at the responses - some have said, ',,,it depends on what you're cutting (certainly true), some have indicated that, ',,,one's knife sharpening skill,,' is a determining factor (also true). Without doubt...
