When did fakes really become a common problem? I'm sure they've always been around, but when did they become a real threat?

Easy to repeat how we should buy from reputable dealers but that doesn't help if you're looking for discontinued models.

What about fakes with different steel. I can see endura or PM fakes but what if they're listed with different steels like HAP40 or s110 etc?

What causes the jump. If hap40 or Super blue or etc is so good, will they be used in production knives? If not, why.
