Re: Spyderco Factory Outlet Seconds Sale 2017

Great sale this year. Didn't find the green caly I was looking for but I'm happy someone else did. I mostly was looking for gifts for my wedding party and a few cheaper knives for myself. So price was more important than rarity to me. Serrated kitchen knife (I think 6") $15 Southard with small ...

Re: Spyderco Factory Outlet Seconds Sale 2017

I'm back and excited for the sale. I've been the last two years and it's always a very nice group and great discounts. Hoping to pick up some gifts for Christmas and my groomsmen for next year. Also looking for more broken knives to modify and fix and some stainless models to laser engrave. I comple...

Re: My CNC Spyderco Scales

Here is the native5 and ambitious. I think the native might be my favorite yet. Wenge with copper inlays. The ambitious is purpleheart. http://i.imgur.com/1w413Yr.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Zc1DAJ9.jpg http://i.imgur.com/kYEiSWw.jpg http://i.imgur.com/5yns1tL.jpg http://i.imgur.com/iqjzBiF.jpg https://i...

Not the comparison you asked for, but it is significantly bigger than the Caly3 though they share many of the same specs.

Re: Why not make lockbacks with wooden handles?

Having done some of this stuff, there are a few problems. Using exotic woods can be really hard with manufacturing processes. G10 and micarta annd steel and aluminum and FRN are all really predictable. If spyderco used wood, they might expect to waste more parts due to natural variations, warp, etc....

Re: Spyderco Seconds Purchases: Your Personal Criteria ?

Ive been twice, and used the same criteria each time. I make a list of knives I want, the MSRP, the MAP, and a sort of priority list. No sense in me buying a knife I don't want (not interested in reselling). I didnt see any knives that had "unacceptable" flaws at the sale. The problem is m...

My CNC Spyderco Scales

This thread will be a log for my custom spyderco scales. I eventually plan to have sets of scales for the mule team, pm2, para3, tenacious, ambitious, dragonfly, native, manix 2, and sage 1. I am maybe halfway there, but am going to make several designs of some. First, the non-cnc made scales. Manix...

Re: Policy on replacing stripped screw heads?

While this thread has pretty much gone off the rails, I figured I would update with the result. Customer service shipped a single screw free of charge after receiving an email describing the situation. I phrased it as "purchase" a screw, but it was sent without asking for payment. I unders...

Re: Policy on replacing stripped screw heads?

The red Loctite is a not-so-subtle hint that those screws are not there for the user, they are there for the factory. That said, they sent me some new screws for my Para2 a few years ago when someone pointed out there was one missing in a picture I posted, just for asking them. I hadn't even notice...

Policy on replacing stripped screw heads?

Hey guys. I understand from the warranty that damage from disassembly is not covered by the warranty. I had some grit in the pivot of my para3, so I wanted to take it apart to clean and re-oil the pivot. The screws wouldn't come out easily so I used a soldering iron to loosen up the loc-tite. I was ...

Re: stabilized wood?

I voted yes, but not sure I would actually purchase. The thing about stabilized wood (and wood in general) is that you need to be pretty picky about the specific piece of wood. Production knives in cocobolo, ironwood, and ebony are all fine since the grain isnt the main attraction. To me though, sta...

Re: Spyderco knives: Copper, Brass and Bronze scales?

I love copper. I bought some copper sheets to make custom scales. So far I have only used it on a Gerber Dime multi-tool and a Boker Urban trapper. I does smell, it does patina, but that is my favorite. I would really love untreated copper scales on a carbon steel like superblue. After a couple week...

Re: Mule Team 24

Steel is like fruit cake. The actual steel itself is the cake and the carbides are the chunks of fruit. Using a stone that's harder than the steel matrix but softer than the carbides is like using a knife that's harder than the cake but softer than the fruit. You'll be able to cut a piece of cake i...

Re: Mule Team 24

I'm pretty sure the ceramic stones are harder than 68 RC. It's not surprising that a stone harder than the steel matrix was able to cut the steel matrix. Whether it was cutting the carbides in the steel is another matter considering we don't really know what the carbides actually consist of. If the...
