Re: HRC Database
Dr. Thomas has reported other's research that HRC is positively correlated with edge stability in a lab experiment: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2018/09/24/edge-stability-part-2/ This makes sense as hardness is also correlated with a higher elastic modulus - how far steel can bend and then spring bac...

Re: HRC Database
For a different perspective and really a complimentary one, check out Cedric and Ada's spreadsheet, particularly the summary tab https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1b_rNfdJnL9oyn-JoL9yUHhUmDLAP1hJ1dN_0q5G4tug/edit#gid=43566811. Aggregating the good, bad heat treats of both steels still show M39...

Re: HRC Database
This knife has seen some fairly serious use and is a solid, reliable performer. Dan To be clear I didn't intend to impugn Spyderco's heat treatment. I believe that it is probably the best one out there for production blade. I only wanted to share the observation that it seems odd that people have b...

Re: HRC Database
The behind the edge measurement was ommited so there's no way to know if they where truly identical. There definitely needs to be more testing done on M390 at different hardness levels. I don't really disagree with you I was just pointing out that the test had more variables than Larrins Catra test...

Re: HRC Database
A dramatic jump in edge performance is absent in CATRA testing: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/10/07/catra-tests-of-m390-knives/ That test was with production folding knives with different geometries. You would need to have them all the same like Larrin does for his testing. Quote from article: &...

Re: HRC Database
It is certainly possible that m390 somehow benefits from higher hardness more than other steels. It just doesn't seem very likely or like something there is any direct evidence for. In fact there is direct evidence against this hypothesis from Catra tests. I have also heard that the higher HRC m390 ...

Re: HRC Database
My understanding is that there's a noticeable jump in performance (sharpening experience, edge stability, etc.) from M390/20CV/204P at 61+ compared to 58-60. Comparing the HRC of any two steels, like M390 and S90V, really isn't right. Each steel seems to have its own range of HRC, and inside that H...

Re: HRC Database
Extrapolating slightly from Larrin's CATRA testing, m390 at 59-60 peforms better than VG-10. It should be more like s30v at 61-62 or XHP. Not sure how 59 hrc m390 became so loathed other than those youtubers who I thought were largely debunked and they were claiming numbers more like 50-56 hrc. s90v...

Re: HRC Database
I found this video with some testing: https://youtu.be/NChh3jHKSXQ
Among the claimed results is the Cruwear Micarta pm2 at about 63.5.
I was also hoping that I could persuade someone to measure either the M390 PITS or M390 SpyOpera...

Re: 2022 P.I.T.S Sprint!
I recently picked up this as an upgrade for my tried and true n690 version. I found one that had been sitting on a shelf at a local store for a year. I have a question about it: has anyone tested the hardness of this m390? I ask because lionsteel and fox seem to run their m390 on the softer side of ...

Re: Why are so many people concerned with perfect blade centering?
Since I am the dumb SOB who necro’d I guess I should respond. I'll still fight over this and I can give you any number of analogies where people choose this same level of accuracy in other things they buy where they wouldn't be so dismissive of the issue. Would you buy a new car if all the door/fend...

Re: Why are so many people concerned with perfect blade centering?
My theory is that lots of knife people have anxiety issues and use knife collecting to cope. When they notice a small flaw on a knife, the object no longer soothes them because it triggers anxiety. I have experienced it myself but it usually wears off after owning and actually using a knife for a bi...

Re: rolling vs. chipping
Necroposting because I like this thread. I took a few photos of an S90v lil native after it opened a fairly tough plastic package. Good example of very minor edge rolling (along the bottom edge of the first photo) and maybe a tiny bit micro chipping (circled area of each photo, though this could be ...

So does this mean that the next magnacut model won’t be released this year? I don’t know how these things work.

Re: LiL native s90v ?????
Just received one. I like it. While it is slightly gritty it also drops shut which is nice.
I have a question though. It looks like the ramped part of the lock on mine has a divot which I have not seen on my only other compression lock. Is this normal?

Caring for Spyderco PITS
I recently purchased a PITS. I relubricated it with mineral oil, but after doing so I realized a small dab of grease has been placed right into the detent on the blade, and might have been serving an important function. I know there is a high load between the titanium handle and blade on that point,...

Re: Collectors club knife sold as new
Thanks for the replies everyone. It seems like new condition and I couldn't care less about the number on the blade. I did notice that the micarta/g10 backspacer drill holes had just a couple shavings still hanging off, but they were easy to remove.
