Re: James Keating Civilian Demonstration

The Civilian is a knife that a minimally-trained individual can use effectively, for extreme-close-range personal defense, yet also has qualities that an expert, such as James A Keating, can utilize, at a much higher level. Let’s keep in mind that James Keating has created other video presentations,...

Re: My worst nightmare happened to me yesterday while kayak fishing.

I empathize with the OP. I lost my ancient Mariner, when it was not yet ancient, but still rather new, while kayaking in the Trinity River delta area, in SE Texas. This, and a few other incidents, prompted me to stop trusting pocket clips, as a means of general carry. I was giving away too many kniv...

Re: The Last Gun You Bought

Having retired, so that having a 24/7 “duty to respond” has given way to simply carrying a pistol comfortably, has changed the focus of what guns I want to carry. The infirmities of getting older have, very much, influenced which guns are too painful to shoot, anymore, and, which guns I still trust ...

Re: So what did y'all end up buying this year (2021)?

I bought two new Civilians, in September, to establish a reserve, in case they again become scarce. I bought my first two Civilians, in the Nineties, one of which has become misplaced. If I really like a knife, I tend to acquire spares. I would have bought at least one Fish Hunter, perhaps two, to u...

Re: Which spyderco is in the mail?

I just ordered two Civilians, from authorized dealer NC Blade, through the evil-bay. Now and then, I will order spares, of a knife I particularly like, as a hedge against discontinuation. My defensive blade training moved up several notches, starting in 2003, when I attended a small amount of traini...

Re: Throwback Thursday Carry

I saw this title, and thought, well, Civilian, but then decided to check, and was pleasantly surprised to see that my two Civilians, one of which I have had for a VERY long time, are the current version. So, I will carry a Bram Frank Gunting, for the rest of the day, today. It has been a while since...

Re: Models you'd like to see return.

I accumulated what should be an adequate supply, to last my lifetime, but the Gunting, a collaboration with Bram Frank, remains my favored discontinued Spydero model. It is not just a matter of the ramp, as I would love the Gunting, even without the ramp, but the ramp is a very intuitive (for me) op...

Re: The Last Gun You Bought

My most-recent firearms addition is a Glock G26, Gen3. I had sold my previous G26, a Gen4, to one of my former rookies, before I retired, as compact nines had become too much for my aging, aching right wrist. (I also traded-away my three G19 pistols, only keeping full-sized Glocks.) Well, I soon rea...

Re: DO NOT Try to Take Yr Knife into a Presidential Candidate's Rally!1,000s Confiscated

I do not understand the reason to attend a political rally, unless someone paid me quite handsomely to work a security detail, in which case I would be bringing guns, knives, a Taser, and a baton.

Re: At which price range are the majority of your knife purchases?

I chose $100 to $299, figuring that this being the Spyderco-only section of the forum, other knives should be factored-out. On the custom/hand-made/mid-tech side, I tend to spend a bit more, with $400+ not being unusual. These higher-end knives being fewer, my overall average may well be within the ...

Re: What's your most recently acquired grail/special to you Spydie?

Well, the Gunting or the original Ronin, whichever was the more-recently produced of the two. Nothing has been a highly-anticipated "grail" since that time. I did handle a Temperance II at the Blade Show, to confirm fit in my hands. (I have an original Temperance, so there is no particular...

Welcome, Brian! :) I live in the nicely small city of Bellaire, Texas, which is now surrounded by the sprawling Houston. I am not a collector, either, but sure do manage to accumulate quite a few. ;) When I really like a knife, I tend to accumulate at least one spare, perhaps two, or even half a doz...

Re: Your EDC On Tuesday, September 11, 2001

If I did not yet have an Assist, then it would have been one of the several Rescue models I have carried for the past couple of decades. I think this is before I started carrying a Gunting,in addition to the Rescue/Assist, because I think the Gunting came along after 2001. (I know I was EDC-ing a Gu...

Hmm, 240 years; in a decade we will see the quarter-millenium mark of what I sincerely hope and pray will still be a democratic republic of United States.
