Re: What are ya drinkin????

A blend of two teas, from Teavana: Samurai Chai Mate', and White Ayurvedic Chai, sweetened with clover honey, made with 16 ounces of water. This is actually my second serving of tea this morning, my previous being Tazo Awake English Breakfast, with honey and milk. I am not a tee-totaler, but very ra...

Re: Where's your Sweet Spot?

I am still trying to decide my three best choices. One problem is that my comfort sweet spot, appendix, is not very concealable, at least not with serious-sized firearms*, though I do have a Raven Concealment ACR en route, and will soon acquire a G26, to test the theory one more time. I am lean enou...

Re: Practical vs. Tactical?

Back in '68, Gerber made pretty good knives and I bought their Mark I dagger in anticipation of a tour in Vietnam. As an Artillery officer expecting work as a forward observer, I figured I could use the knife for quiet work along the perimeter of Night Defensive Positions... So, there I was in the ...

Re: What are you listening to?

My newest CD is a recording of Kris Kristofferson in Austin. I think it is part of the Austin City Limits series, on CD. It is in my truck, so not handy at the moment, to be sure. (I almost never listen to music inside the home, preferring as much quiet as possible.)

Re: Practical vs. Tactical?

You must be the same Rex from TPI? Good bumping into you here sir Yes. Good to see you here. I have been unable to log-in at TPI for a while, due to "mis-remembering" the password. I cannot request a password re-set, because I no longer use the e-mail that I used when I joined. Perhaps I ...

Going into harm's way, with blade in hand.

I did this one time, in nearly thirty-two years (and still counting) of big–city policing. I used a non-Spyderco Karambit to cut bungie cords securing the rear doors of a stolen van. A karambit can be used in the extended grip to hook something, and then cut on the pull stroke, so that is what I did...

Re: Practical vs. Martial?

The practicality of the Spyderco Gunting, in my hand, as nothing to do with the martial art, Modern Arnis, of the designer, Bram Frank. Structurally, my hand must be a close match with Bram's, because no folder I have ever handled is a better fit for me, in forward or reverse grip, edge-in or edge-o...

Re: Texas Knife Law Preemption Takes Effect Today - Ushers in Greater Freedom for Texas

This is well-timed, for me, as I may return to private-citizen status as soon as the end of this year. Compared to many other states, Texas is relatively knife-friendly, so it is nice for all regions within the state to be on the same page. Perhaps, in the next legislative session, more improvements...

Re: How many knives do you pack?

One, to as many as three or four. First will almost always be an Assist. The second will, typically, be a Victorinox SAK, the model depending upon anticipated activities. The third/fourth, if carried, will be very environment-specific, and could be anything from a pure weapon, such as my Civilian, t...

Re: Eickhorn Military Knife: Nice! My FS2000...

The Eickhorn dagger that really got my attention was the FS2000, which has some characteristics quite faithful to the Fairbairn-Sykes design, but the distal part of the blade a bit more like that of the Gerber Mark II. I did not like it so much, immediately, but then its balance and handling qualiti...

Re: Shotgun tips and advice?

I like a rather minimalist, lightweight shotgun. My personally-owned Remington 870P patrol shotgun has an 18" barrel, no mag tube extension, and a bead sight. There is a Vang-comp barrel in place, to keep the buckshot pattern tighter for street fighting, but for a dedicated home-defense weapon,...

Re: Motorcycles

I rode motorcycles in the early 1990s. I tried three Harleys, which was what several co-workers rode, but then settled upon BMW as being a better fit for me. My riding was limited due to being a single dad, with custody of my young son. It seemed a shame to let it sit so much, so I sold my BMW R100R...

Re: Comfortable discrete knife carry options?

My VertX and Blauer pants do not "scare people." Perhaps they are a bit less threatening than 5.11? These cargo-pocket pants look less, uh, "tactical" than typical BDU or 5.11 pants. My employer, a big-city PD, has issued me both brands, in dark navy blue, and I have bought a few...

Re: need help straightening pocket clip for Military

I mostly stopped using the clipped-in-pocket carry method for Spyderco knives after bending several clips, and losing more than one whole knife. Long ago, I managed to bend the clip of my Mili, damage one or more of the mounting screw holes, and damage the paint of a car, in one episode, so my Mili ...

Re: People Stealing at Work...

Unattended purses are targets of theft, everywhere in the world, even in the "nice" parts of the most civilized areas. I am amazed that anyone would think otherwise. Yes, it will vary, to a degree, depending upon the local culture, but theft is everywhere. Thieves can be some of the most c...

Re: Top reasons to always carry a knife? What are yours?

A knife is an emergency tool; most of life's emergencies are not defensive in nature, but involve such things as entanglements, sometimes complicated by dragging. The young violinist whose slung violin case was caught in a subway door comes to mind, and many of us have probably known someone whose h...

Re: Favorite Tactical Knife

If I felt that, were I to be attacked, not only would I be unable to escape, but once caught, having a defensive weapon would actually play against me, I would most certainly not leave the house. At least, not until the appropriate number of basement training montages had prepared me for the outsid...

Re: Broke my clip on Caly 3.5 today

After losing several clipped-in knives, including my Mariner, and breaking or bending clips, inclding that on my Mili, I long ago abandoned the use of the clip, for the most part. I recently resumed carrying my Civi, clipped-in, and sure enough, within a few weeks, I bent down, and then stood up; a ...
