Re: Deer Hunting Mule - current and recent steel choices
^not exactly. At least, not that I'm aware of. Of the current offerings, the Moran has a lot of the same attributes. It looks a bit like a small, understated Nessmuk. I think a Nessmuk would be a great heritage project for Sal to do, like he did with the Respect Bowie.

Re: A copper spyderco
I was a big fan of copper until I started making knife parts with it. I like the color, the way it patinas and the natural anti-bacterial properties. It just really sucks to work with. Copper is super gummy which is a PITA for cutting, drilling, grinding, even sanding. Then, it's soooo heavy. Even c...

Re: Deer Hunting Mule - current and recent steel choices
Not suggesting just wondering. Looked up nessmuk knife and saw a Damascus nessmuk. It created a question that I have no clue about. Would a Damascus hunting knife even work? Would the toothy effect that a Damascus blade gets as it dulls help it for processing a deer or bigger? It would work just fi...

Re: Deer Hunting Mule - current and recent steel choices
Lots of good answer here already. I'm never quite sure what someone is looking for when they say "hunting" knife. They could be looking for a camp/utility knife, they could be looking for a skinning knife, or they could be seeking a knife that will be suitable in both roles. For utility wo...

Re: What knife steel and handle are best for cold weather high altitude hiking?
Cold temperatures effect different steels to different degrees. Altitude will not have an affect. Basically, cold has the potential to make steel brittle. There's a cold point for every steel where the steel will loose a significant amount of it's toughness. It's called the DBTT (ductile to brittle ...

Re: Why Do Seki Models Have Lock Rock??!!
Numbers! Nice work Bolster! Thank you for doing this. Now, (particularly if you do a bunch of these tests) everyone can see for themselves that there are no special back-locks that are perfectly rigid. There never has been a back-lock that didn't have some blade movement, and there never will be. I...

Nice work Moonies! Those are all very nice Mules you've made. I like the way the G10 pins look against the wood as well.

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
Beautiful set of scales :smiling-heart-eyes I would just drill the mule tang to match those holes and attach with solid pins the same as that lanyard hole pin material (brass?) … Who’s gunna know…. :shush Send them my way ;) Thanks mate! But that handle won't fit a Mule. It was actually made for a ...

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
Nearly made the 2 left scales again the other day :shush Pretty sure that both sets of liners have to be on the inside of the handle scale against the tang, mistake has been made once or twice by me….. :cussing Man, I made 3 left scales for a Tenacious a couple of months ago. I notice I made 2 left...

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
Too funny, I don't have a drawer, I have what I call a "wall of failure". A mounted rack with all the messed up scales or bad ideas :smlling-eyes Could be called "wall of lessons learned" :thinking but I've repeated the same mistakes :confounded :thinking Maybe if I mounted some...

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
I searched a lot and there's no spring with the right dimensions to replace this one. It's piano wire, 5mm diameter, rolled over itself in a coil of like 15 turns. It's pretty strong already ! all I seem to be able to do is buy the same hardened spring steel called piano wire and do another one, wh...

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
I have a done it wrong draw :shush Assuming you meant drawer, (I am not fully fluent in Australian yet :winking-tongue ) I too have one of those. It's overflowing with handles and a few blades I messed up along the way, and the bottom is probably still wet from the tears of the first few times I th...

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
Yes it is indeed :D right now it is in sort of a zip-lock bag when not in use. I need to buy/build a box with aeration and filtration in order to protect it nicely. Yes , build a box with filtered openings for that unit, or something. I use a similar DC power output for anodizing titanium and the m...

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
I can't wait to see what you do with this ! Personally I went the belt grinder route, a friend and me found schematics to buy for 5 bucks (we definitely should have paid more to get better plans) and he made me a 2 positions (0 and 90° to the left) belt grinder with flat platten arm, small wheels a...

Re: Grinding on the Hardened Steel of Mules
I was just scrolling though and this thread MADE ME log in, just to tell you how much I like your grinder clamp set-up and the git'er done approach that you're taking toward this project. Great stuff! That will absolutely work! When I look at the set-up above, one possible minor modification comes t...
