Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end

In that sense I agree. I had old slip joints when I was young (I will be 78 in a couple of months) and was quite happy with them. The Navy introduced me to small fixed blades as an actual work and safety tool whilst working deck sea detail or replenishment evolutions. Then in the early 70s I bought ...

Re: Odds of more choil-less designs

I like choils. They provide more security and control and the few fractions of an inch you have to give up on the edge is insignificant in comparison.

Re: "Laser milled Spider" on Watu blades

Thanks for those replies. I also think that Watu is so specific and produced as small batch, that it won't be counterfeited. Thanks all for taking time to answer and thx for picture Pstone. Definitely the fact that your bug seems to be not as defined as others, tends to confirm my impression and re...

Re: Would you be interested in a smaller version of the Respect (FB44GP)?

I don’t think so. The Respect is a tribute to the iconic Bowie knife. By all accounts the original was a large butcher type knife. No one today knows what it actually looked like but knives that were made during and right after that time all have the iconic big clip blade. Trying to make a mini-Bowi...

Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end

It's interesting to bring Kuhn into this. IMO, the idea of a paradigm shift can't work when we're talking about a tool. It goes the other way around: tools are artifacts of paradigms. That is, the closest thing we've seen to a paradigm shift in the knife industry is the shift from knives as tools t...

Einstein was educated in math and physics. Just because his job wasnt in a position in those fields, doesnt mean his research was outside of those fields. He didnt come up with relativity theory by studying poetry.
I don’t get your point. Can you please clarify?

Re: Long-term pakkawood scale use?

Pakkawood is supposed to be very stable stuff. I haven't noticed any changes on my delica or dragonfly, and I live in a very humid area. It looks and feels as nice as it did on day one, imo. Excellent. Thanks for the quick reply! Do you perform any regular proactive maintenance? Mineral oil, etc?

Re: Dragonfly vs Lil' Native

I like the Lil’ Native far better. I love the compression lock and hand no issues with it on the Lil’ Native. Just takes a bit of getting used to. I also prefer the wire clip.

Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end

The core definition of “paradigm”. Not from a dictionary but from the man who discovered it: “For well-integrated members of a particular discipline, its paradigm is so convincing that it normally renders even the possibility of alternatives unconvincing and counter-intuitive. Such a paradigm is opa...

Re: The perceived need for instantaneous one hand operation has driven folding knife design into a dead end

It is obvious that my use of “innovation” was way too broad. Perhaps, “revolutionary change” is better. As detailed in Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure Of Scientific Revolutions all major scientific revolutions (plate tectonics, physics, cosmology, chemistry, etc,) are created by people who work outside ...

There's plenty of makers who revisit traditional designs with modern materials when you're aiming for "going back to a simpler time" - many of our ancestors would have loved one hand open and close
True. But what’s your point?
