Re: Ok, could it be that LC200N fares better against Magnacut than some might think?

Hardness with good microstructure is an important factor for edge stability. It's not just carbide size, volume and raw toughness from lower hardness. This!! What makes a good knife steel is a good balance of these qualities, and getting a HT with the hardness as high as you can get it for the task...

Re: Ok, could it be that LC200N fares better against Magnacut than some might think?

... Added to my post above: A bit later in the vid it gets mentioned (by the kc guy) how tough and "un-chippy" LC 200N is. This relates to my original question that made me start this thread: IF LC is really that "tough" (and that´s what I found too to in my limited experience),...

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??

I have been carrying the Spyderco Resilience. Until I save up enough money to get the Spyderco Military, this is what I am going to be carrying. The 4"+ blade is great, a large blade is what I like to carry, as large as I can get away with legally and practically. Small knives have their place ...

Re: Sharpmaker Elite Edition

Maybe an all-Diamond/CBN set of rods for the 'Special Version'? Like a C, M, and F set of Diamond or CBN rods? That would be nice to have. Personally, I feel the setup now is fine, as having the C Diamond/CBN rods for the large amount of work forming the burr, and then the sintered ceramic Tri-Angle...

Re: Sharpmaker Elite Edition

Senfkarte, yes, you can tilt the Sharpmaker also. I am talking about rotating the base. Ah, now this makes sense. You want to totate around the other axis. Sorry. No problem, I wasn't really clear what I meant. I assumed that everyone was familiar already with this idea and technique, that is my fa...

Re: Sharpmaker Elite Edition

JoviAl-
You can always try rotating the base of the Sharpmaker. Someone years ago came up with a formula to get a specific angle, and I wrote a small computer program that you can run in your web browser that will tell you what angle is the base needed to be turned to get a specific angle.

Re: Lansky - What am I doing wrong?

DBCajun, Make sure you use the coarsest stone for most of the work, ie use the coarse stone for most of the time you are sharpening, everything else is just refining the edge and minimizing the burr. Like Sal said, get a loupe, 10x should be enough to see what is going on. Like others said, maybe al...

Re: Spyderco Military Observations

I was loaned a Spyderco Military M4 by a friend, and I really liked it. One of my favorite knives of all time is the now discontinued Benchmade AFCK, and I liked the Military better than that. It is way lighter, has a more ergonomic handle, and a better blade shape, and it still retains the negative...

Re: Sharpening/honing suggestions

damiand, I would suggest watching a video about the Spyderco Sharpmaker in your native language. Try and not worry about most of the things you are concerned about, as they are not that important when you are just starting out. Just try to keep the knife as sharp as it came from the factory, and use...

Somewhere up in Heaven, Cliff Stamp is smiling. He had been advocating a 'performance line' for a while, hopefully it sells well and we see more performance models coming.

Re: Polished Edge: When, Why, What Steels??

I usually run polished edges (up to Spyderco UF or Surgical Black Arkansas stone) on most of the EDC knives, since my natural cutting motion is more of a push cut, along with my preference for using and keeping my blades at a high sharpness (arm hair shaving to head hair whittling) vs a working edge...

The way I would look at it is not the steels purpose, but the knife's purpose, then selecting the steel by it's attributes.

Re: A Tale of Two Hawkbills

I found the same thing with my Spyderco Merlin and Byrd Meadowlark 2 Hawkbill. I really like the more rounded serrations on the Byrd vs the Spyderco one. I recently gifted the Byrd to my neighbor so I need to get another one, and I really like EDC'ing the Merlin as a secondary knife.

I am a little ambidextrous as I only do some things with my left hand, but I do favor my right hand, so I consider myself right handed.
