Re: Maxamet 13dps edge test

Today I thinned the lower 1/4 primary bevel of this maxamet (Josh's want a thinner BTE) using slack belt. Now, at sub 0.010" BTE 13dps, It's quite pleasant to cut thing with it and had no issue aggressively whittled Lignum Vitae. It's an awesome knife for most knife users. For my EDC - I insis...

Re: Maxamet 13dps edge test

I've always wondered about reheat treating blades. Would you have to remove the edge so it doesn't overheat? ... No edge overheat issue because blade is in stainless steel foil pouch/envelope and oven is within 50+-F isothermal. Most of the time, I dull the edge just enough for ease of (careless) h...

Re: Maxamet 13dps edge test

Able to whittle elk antler tip with 13dps edge is better than 15-16dps average. Edge must be strong and tough enough to successfully dig into the hard & dense antler. My projection (not really an expectation) passing test angle was 14-15dps = well done Spyderco. However compare to my research re...

Re: Endura zdp-189 cut heavy duty scouring pad with factory & 15dps edges

Josh Crutchley (a member here) lend me a Spyderco Maxamet knife to test. Thanks much! Result: at 13dps, it cuts 33" of heavy duty scouring pad. You're welcome, would love to see Maxamet in the hands of custom makers like yourself. Would also like to see more models available in it from Spyderc...

Re: Magnacut

I used apex bevel face length - at any distance between edge and bevel shoulder - to calculate BTE. Easier this way using closeup image. e.g. I added BTE at 0.2mm(hypotenuse/side) up from edge https://i.imgur.com/lk2fIvc.jpg IMO - Order of importance: angle (of cutting wedge) then BTE then primary b...

Re: Thin grinds?

That's cool - yeah goes simple first then decide whether to jump in the knife making rabbit hole. Experiment with aebl, magnacut first before s*v steels Looks good. I'm slowly buying the things to make small blades on my own. Your weed burner S30V has me thinking to go with a simple setup. I have an...

Re: Endura zdp-189 cut heavy duty scouring pad with factory & 15dps edges

I have never owned a ZDP knife so I am not making these claims myself. However, I have heard/seen people talk about the pitting and chipping. Then you hear about how hard it is to sharpen. Basically, I stick to my easy to use/sharpen steels and let others form opinions about the more exotic stuff f...

Re: Endura zdp-189 cut heavy duty scouring pad with factory & 15dps edges

I've no plan on testing Spyderco K390 nor Maxamet however I would test *as received* either or both if someone send it/them to me. From existing data on Spyderco K390 & Maxamet, I guess both would perform better than zdp-189.

Re: Endura zdp-189 cut heavy duty scouring pad with factory & 15dps edges

If you don't mind to elaborate, dislike & like about Spyderco zdp-189 knives. This knife passed whittle elk antler tip at 15dps is very respectable/good, since apex must has sufficient strength & toughness to do so. Cutting heavy duty scouring pad (which contains ~600 grit Aluminum Oxide = s...

Re: M398 Edge Stability Test

Hi J. Thanks. I found this M398 tougher than my previous ht m390 at 64rc. It has wider range of plasticity (i.e. will micro roll). Sorry about the broken tip. I prefer (ok, bad habit of) fine/delicate tip... don't recall whether your zwear blade tip is thin or ht wasn't as good. I agree, M2 66rc is ...

Hi Sal,

I ht and made and tested this m398 knife. 10 hardness readings (before putting on the handle) between 64-65rc. Desert Ironwood handle.

It's just one of many steels I am testing in this batch of experimental ht: Image
