Re: *Shipping to Australia & New Zealand Suspended*

Hi Kristy,

Thanks for the update. Does this apply to hardcopy 2022 catalogues too?

Re: Affording the Necessary Stones for Super Steels

Silicon carbide will work fine and is relatively inexpensive. I prefer the Atomas to the Venevs for coarse stock removal. The Venevs load up more quickly whereas the Atomas allow swarf to flush away. I use the Atoma 140 for maybe 85% of all my sharpening. A diamond or CBN stone in the 400-600 grit r...

Re: Patu ethnic series knife?

The geometry of the patu is based on its intended purpose as a war club by people who did not have iron/steel tools. I’ve examined a few patu. The narrow side will break skin like the side of a flat sap, but it’s really a striking weapon. My understanding is that Maori commonly used obsidian and mus...

Re: What do lefties think about serrations?

The existing ‘righty’ serrations actually seem optimised for left hand use - at least for the kind of cutting I use my SE knives for.

Re: Dragonfly 2 blade centering

Sometimes, loosening all the screws and then progressively retightening them from the rear of the knife to the pivot, with something wedged to center the blade can help. This may not work that well with a Dragonfly. Also, it’s been a while since I dismantled a DF, but if it has PB washers, you may w...

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??

I’ve been enjoying comparing, carrying and using my Spydie fixed blades on weekends lately. The SPY27 Mule, Waterway, Southfork, Bradley Bowie and Proficient have all been in the mix. Today it’s this superb blade, which helped me concoct a green tea and overproof white rum hot toddy: 03F5CB62-775F-4...

Re: Where Balance Point?

Depends on the size of the knife, but generally I like the balance point for most Spydies to be on the index finger when held in the 50/50 choil. So about a 7 or 8.

Re: Dedicated left-hand SE grind model?

I’m a lefty and I actually find the existing SE grind to be perfect for me. Single sided, lefty chisel ground, kata ha Japanese knives are ground on the same side, although they’re optimised for slicing on a cutting board of course. Sal has mentioned that the existing SE grind has a safety aspect fo...

Re: Pitting on LC200N Pacific Salt 2

Yes, I have a few flecks of very light pitting on my SE Pac Salt 2 as well. I assume it’s from particles of other steels being caught in the grinding striations on the blade flats when I strop the knife, and possibly causing some degree of galvanic corrosion. I’d conjecture that a finer surface poli...

Favourite Spydie is always a hard question, but my most carried and used model for a good while now has been the K390 Urban.

In terms of high end knives that I really enjoy, the Proficent makes me happy every time I use it.

Re: A Case To Be Made For The Dodo Model

I’d definitely be up for a new Dodo.

SPY27 in SE and PE maybe?

The M4 Dodo is a coveted model for me also, so a tool steel version in REX45 or K390 would be pretty cool too.

Re: Some problems with Emphasis

I checked both of my Emphasis models and neither of them rap the inside of the backspacer with the edge like yours. A common solution for this issue with traditional slipjoints is to carve a small piece of wood from a matchstick or a coffee stirrer and wedge it under the kick to raise it a little. H...

Re: Outdoor Spyderco - what would you pick?

@Cambertree - those custom 3D shaped scales look sweet - who made them?. I need to get my hands on a Stretch to test it. It would in particular be interesting to compare it side-by-side to the Lawman :) Yes, handle on the Chief (and I mean chief not the Spydiechef) is well shaped for work, the knif...

Re: Outdoor Spyderco - what would you pick?

The Kapara wouldn’t be my knife of choice as a camp type folder, because of the thin handle grip you mentioned. By comparison, the also slender handled Chief, with its typical ‘Sal Shaped’ design seems much more comfortable to me. But of course, you could get by just fine with the Kapara if you had ...
