Re: Outdoor Spyderco - what would pick?

I am glad to hear that the Tenatious in S35VN is performing well. I am going to be honest - it is not the 'hottest' knife in the group, but would be considerably cheaper than any other candidate I am looking at at the moment. ... I must admit that the more I am looking at (== YT reviews) the Caribbe...

Re: Outdoor Spyderco - what would pick?

Wow, thanks for all your feedback and ideas. Let me go through them quickly :) First of all - I am only looking at folding knives at the moment. I plan to make a fixed blade myself, working on the design at the back of my head (I find the Bradford knives really interesting). but will probably only g...

Re: Clad steels and the affects on performance?

Clad steel is easier to bend/straighten and also easier to thin later down the road (though this is rarely a concern for pocket knives and much more relevant to kitchen knives).

Outdoor Spyderco - what would you pick?

OK, I was pondering over this for a while now and I have probably looked at most if not all possible candidates and got to a point that asking for what others would pick and why might help me to get a different perspective. So - I am after a knife that I want to carry when out on trips with my famil...

Re: The Swayback is awesome!

It is a super cool looking (and apparently very well made) knife, but I guess it does not sell much as it is not super practical and the design for modern times is 'odd'. I myself have actually a soft spot for odd Spydercos - my next one will most likely be the Schempp bowie folder ... (unless I wil...

Re: K390 Police 4 LW SE

I find it interesting that the serrations are much less aggressive than what we see on VG-10 knives (or even H1). I am wondering whether that is related more to the designed use, or was "dictated" by the steel properties. One could go as far as call it a pocket bread knife :p

Re: Reveal 8 ETA?

Well, it feels a bit like a reveal for the sake of a reveal, but given the situation in the world today I am actually surprised that they did one at all. I was waiting for the reveal before making any further shopping choices and now can proceed. The Z-Wear Mule is tempting and the dark red mug is s...

Re: More Edge Retention Testing - Rex 45, Maxamet, SPY27, XHP, CPM-T15, 420, Rex 76

I'm sure rope or cardboard testing could be used to get consistent results. However, the majority of rope or cardboard cutting tests are done across a vast range or different knives which makes sorting through the results very difficult. It's just the nature of the beast when you have to rely on av...

Re: More Edge Retention Testing - Rex 45, Maxamet, SPY27, XHP, CPM-T15, 420, Rex 76

I think it should be fair to say that different type of testing is going to bring slightly different edge retention results. Larrin of course uses the golden standard - the Catra testing. We have seen somewhat different relative results (I mean comparing how two different knives in different steels ...

Re: Spyderco shopping on Amazon - experiences

I only order from Amazon (.de) if I am not sure the knife is what I am looking for (lockdown or not, there is no usable knife shop worth its salt in my area), because to return the knife is 100% hassle free (as long as Amazon is the company selling/shipping the item). Otherwise I prefer buying from ...

Re: Endura sized knife with finger choil

In my opinion (purely based on what I saw online, no first hand experience) the way the finger choil is designed on Kapara is the way to go. It is there without sacrificing more than just few mm from the cutting edge (or in other words - not making the handle unnecessarily long on knives with larger...

Re: Stones needed for K390

The wish for super wear resistant steel in a kitchen knife should come together with the awareness that thinning such a knife (what will sooner or later be necessary to keep up the cutting performance) even with diamond sharpening stones will be a VERY daunting task.

Re: The Manix 2 lw is pretty good

A bit too much belly towards the tip (for what I am looking for at the moment), but other than that it is VERY tempting.
