Re: Extra coarse/low grit stropping
I would also be extra interested in seeing a highly magnified shot of the edge that 16 micron stropping yields. Optical magnification can't produce an image at a scale that would allow you to see the scratch pattern produced at the apex by stropping on coarse particulate abrasives, especially becau...

Re: Extra coarse/low grit stropping
Having experimented a fair bit with coarse particulate abrasive stropping, I'll share some of the things I've learned. One of the difficult aspects to get a handle on is that there is a very loose and non-linear relationship between the grit of abrasive that is applied to the strop and the actual ba...

Re: Thickness behind the edge?
Of the models currently in production by Spyderco the Spydiechef is the thinnest behind the edge, and by some margin. Quoting a post I made in another thread near to when I bought one: I picked up one of these yesterday, mostly based what I'd been hearing about it having a fairly thin edge geometry ...

Re: Maxamet reviews?
I did a series of tests with a Mule Team in Maxamet (available here ) that involved whittling pine and eventually bamboo chopsticks using a ~15 degree per side edge geometry. While the tests were conducted in relation to the debate about whether AlOx and SiC abrasives can be used on high hardness, h...

Re: CPM S110V -- How long will it hold edge at narrow angle?
You shouldn't really need to go less than 15 degrees per side on any knife. I'm not sure that's a very defensible statement considering that the overwhelming majority of Scandinavian ground knives have edge bevels in the 10-12 degree per side range with no microbevels at all and yet are both common...

Re: Behind the edge database!
I can contribute measurements for my Spydiechef: Spine: 0.113" at the plunge line, 0.109" in the middle, 0.034" at the tip 1/4" Behind the apex: ~0.032"-0.035" 1/32" Behind the apex (a standardized approximation of "at the shoulder to the edge"): ~0.015&q...

Re: How do you prioritize blade steel attributes, and why?
My priorities for blade steel attributes for EDC knives follow from how they are used. My EDC cutting tasks primarily consist of corrugated cardboard, paperboard, clamshell packaging, consumer grade zip-ties, and food prep and I typically don't use my EDC knives for an extended duration of cutting i...

Re: Would you buy an AEB-L Military?
I find it fascinating how AEB-L specifically seems to provoke such hostility and animosity from people who I don't recall levying similar hostility towards 52100, SuperBlue or LC200n despite them all having broadly similar properties at high hardness aside from corrosion resistance. As I've said in ...

Re: Would you buy an AEB-L Military?
In news that will surprise absolutely no-one, if Spyderco makes a Military in AEB-L at ~62+ HRC I would buy it in a heartbeat, even though I strongly prefer the PM2 to the Military. AEB-L at high hardness should provide similar performance in virtually all respects barring corrosion resistance to 52...

Re: Anyone else strop there folders?
I commonly use coarse particulate abrasive stropping to create convex microbevels on my knives and to touch up that convex microbevel between full sharpenings. Crossposting an explanation of the complex non-linear relationship between stropping compound abrasive particle size and effective grit: Bas...

Re: What blade shapes would you want in Lc200N?
I will buy anything with a 3"+ cutting edge, plain edge, no recurve, and as thin behind the apex as the Spydiechef (i.e. ~0.035 at 1/4" behind the apex or less and ~0.015 at 1/32" behind the apex or less). I dare not even to dream of it also being ~0.100" the spine or less and ha...

Hey Steel Drake, I'm intrigued by the art in the background - are those pics of old NY subway graf??? It's a photobook called Subway Art. The photos are excellent for showing off mirrored edge bevels because the grafiti have a lot of different colors and shapes in them, for exmaple: http://i.imgur....

Re: Spydiechef-am I the only one??
I am still enjoying mine... had it about a month now. There is still just a touch of stick. Lockup is at about 40%. I had mine micro beveled at 15 dps, main bevel about 12dps and had some issues with edge deformation when cutting on hard surfaces (wood cutting boards, etc). I backed it off to 15 dp...

Re: Your Spyderco Christmas EDC
It'll be the Spydiechef, as I've been carrying it daily since I got it. It's been an utter joy to use a folding knife with a nice thin edge geometry, and LC200n has worked very well being convex microbevelled on a 16 micron CBN balsa wood strop. My lovely wife even got me a photobook for taking pict...

Re: Spydiechef (lc200n) performance thread.
I picked up one of these yesterday, mostly based what I'd been hearing about it having a fairly thin edge geometry and wanting to try LC200n steel. http://i.imgur.com/ya4teif.jpg I am quite amazed at just how thin behind the edge mine was out of the box. Now, note, I did go through all five that my ...

These videos are also crossposted from the above linked ongoing discussion on BF. These tests show that deliberately making very hard cuts into bamboo and delib...

Re: Sharpening rant
I'd guess and say it's around 10 degrees [...] That knife is really only ever used to open mail so a stupid thin edge is just fine. I EDC knives with "stupid thin" edges all the time, ~10 degrees per side with a ~20 degree per side microbevel is pretty much normal for me. My EDC tasks don...
