Although it's certainly not as capable as a Sharpmaker, I have a Lansky triangular crock stick that I take when I travel. Reprofiling with it would be a major project, but touch-ups are OK. The price is reasonable.

While the above data provide a good starting point, keep in mind that Larrin's tests use CATRA and knife blanks with very specific geometry and very controlled motion. Also, CATRA tests measure cutting performance using silica-embedded cardstock. Since pretty much none of us use that exact same ...

Re: VG-10 criticism: why?
A lot of people don't recognize just how fortunate we are to have all the steels available to us now. Just pick the combination of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance that you want, and choose a steel that provides that balance. I remember back when 440C was the knife preferred by ...

Swap the lock bar when you swap the blade. The lock bar material is chosen according to the blade material. They go together.

Re: Blade Show 2025
I went 10 years ago. It was an experience for sure, something to do at least once. It's about a 3 hour drive for me. Every year I think I should go again, but then I think, what am I going to do there besides buy knives?

Re: Will cracks in Manix 2 LW scales become a problem?
The FRCP I dyed took a long time to take the color. I was really wondering what was up since I'd heard about how quickly it goes, but apparently that was with FRN.

Re: Upping the price.
The first Buck 110 I bought was around $30, and would have been in the late '00s or early 2010s. It seemed expensive to me at the time.
The last 110 I bought was in 2017 and was $40. I didn't give it a second thought.
It now costs $65.
I bought a Buck 110 in 1976. My memory is fuzzy but I ...

If you turn it spine down in the open position and pull the lock back you should be able to see the ball. Use a flashlight.

Re: Corrosion and Edge Retention
It is due to the area effect of a large cathode (chrome plating) and a small anode (exposed edge, where metal dissolution occurs). Corrosion rate is a function of electrochemical potential and area. Reduce the area dissolved, and keep the same (or higher) galvanic current due to a relatively much ...

Re: did somebody say magnacut manix...?!
Another data point - my GP Rex 45 came with a nice, smooth action, and centered. Perhaps a tad stronger spring than others I have. I dyed it a nice red, and when I reassembled it I have the scale gap that looks like the first picture that gimibala posted. I didn't notice if that gap was there before ...

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
Finally dyed the manix salt. First time trying a lighter color (not black) on frcp, and it was interesting. First attempt i was going for more of a gold or caramel color with sandstone dyemore. I got it, but it showed every imperfection from the scale molds including the injection spots. It was ...

Very nice color after an additional 1.5 hours at a 7:1 ratio. I can't seem to figure out how to post a picture here, even in full editor mode.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
With roughly 1 oz dye to 7 oz water it is now taking color, but it is definitely not a 5 minute thing. It will probably be an hour at this concentration. A little dish soap but no vinegar - the bottle and the web site don't mention vinegar for DyeMore.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
It is simmering on the stove, so it is hot. I was using less than half of what you use so I just added some more dye to the pot.
Maybe FRCP scales take more time and dye than FRN.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
How much dye are you supposed to use? I have some white scales in the bath and they've been there for 50 minutes and they're really not taking up much color. White scales with rit racing red dyemore. I started with the double concentration they say for polyester, and at 25 minutes I more than ...
